I'm very dissatisfied with the treatment I've received from Dr. Hughes. He is NEVER on time for his appointments, however, I've seen patients forced to reschedule when they arrive late. He appears to repeat the same treatment over and over even if it's not working. He doesn't talk to the patient, educate the patient or include the patient in the decision-making progress. I feel more like a guinea pig than a patient.

Almost every time that I have gone to Dr. Hughes, I have had to wait over 30 mins. past my appointment time. A lot of times I've had to wait over an hour. He usually only shows up to look in your mouth for maybe 5 minutes tops. He has way too many patients and not enough time to see them. He has dropped several of his instruments down my throat. His staff has dropped things and then tried to put them back in my mouth. Also, the treatment has not been very good. So I would go somewhere else if at all possible.

Most of the staff are friendly and helpful but wait times for appointments are far too long.

Dr. Hughes was always very nice, helpful and caring. His office, for the most part, had a young, energetic feel to it. I take exception to the 2 senior receptionists who often came off as stodgy and grumpy. And the many, many long wait times were often almost too much to bear. In the end though, treatment duration was actually less than estimated, and the patient (very picky 15 year-old girl) is quite happy with the results.

Biography

There is nothing better than creating beautiful smiles and playing a role in improving the self-esteem of my patients. Getting to know each individual and family is important to me and keeps my practice focused on our patients and their needs. I have been proud to practice orthodontics in the Springfield community for over ten years, and in this time, I've seen so many young patients grow up to be successful young adults with confident smiles. Becoming an orthodontist has changed my life by making it possible to develop my talents for the benefit of others. I love sharing the excitement of our patients when orthodontic treatment is finished and I also enjoy the technical challenges and active pace of this wonderful field. Continuing education is an integral part of my practice and my professional life. Quite simply, continuing education makes me a better clinician and allows me to provide better care for my patients. Earning my periodic re-certification from the American Board of Orthodontics also helps me to maintain my standards. I love to learn new information and making beautiful smiles is my passion.I also participate in the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists as an affiliate member and take part in an annual residency exchange program between VCU Orthodontics and the orthodontic program at the University of Messina, Italy, where I provide simultaneous translation for Italian lecturers. Learning and sharing new information with colleagues from around the country and the world adds an exciting academic dimension to the work that we do every day in the office. I spend my time outside the office with my wife, Marcela, and our three children. We also have an adorable Siberian cat named Penny. I enjoy staying fit, experimenting in the kitchen, traveling, and going to art museums with my daughters. I am active in my community as well and am involved with the Arlington Arts Center, Tysons Dental Study Club, and the Fairfax County Dental Society. I am currently the president of the MCV Orthodontic Education and Research Foundation and volunteer at local dental donated services events each year.
