An excellent Dr. that will be missed. I was very lucky to have a Dr. so knowledgeable and that took the time to thoroughly address medical problems. Hope his retirement is rewarding! Thank you Dr Niles!

Dr Niles has been an excellent doctor, spending all the necessary time to help diagnose a serious neuromuscular disorder that I have had for 25 years. He is extremely knowledgeable, thoroughly researches your medication, and has helped where many specialists have just shrugged their shoulders. Yes, he goes over his allotted 10 minutes, but seriously with a complex case do you just want a doctor who gives you the quick review and sends you off with a useless prescription, or do you want a doctor that listens, and tries extremely hard to find an answer. I will miss Dr. Niles when he retires, but wish him all the best in his retirement years.

I became Dr. Niles's patient four years ago, when I moved to Vancouver Island. At the time, he was the only MD taking patients within an hour's drive. I am now looking for another doctor, even if it means a longer drive.

HE MADE FUN OF THE FACT THAT I HAVE CANCER
At one appointment, he told me the specialist had found that my skin cancer had returned. It is a more virulent form of skin cancer, with a significant death rate, and I became extremely anxious. He then took my blood pressure, which was understandable high. With a broad smile, he said he probably shouldn't have told me I had cancer before taking my blood pressure. He may have thought it was funny, but I didn't.

HE LED ME TO BELIEVE (INCORRECTLY) THAT I WAS SERIOUSLY ILL
I had metastatic prostate cancer a few years ago. I thought I was cured, and I was devastated when he told me tests had detected PSA (a marker for prostate cancer) in my urine. Only later, when I surfed the Internet, did I find the reported PSA levels meant "undetectable."

HE WAS RUDE AND ARGUMENTATIVE
At my last appointment, I asked him if he could give me the second dose of the pneumonia vaccine. He looked perplexed, then he scrolled through my chart and announced I had never had a pneumonia vaccine. I told him I had the vaccine on my previous visit, and he checked and said I hadn't. In fact, he said, there is no pneumonia vaccine. I said I had the first dose of Prevnar on my previous visit, and now I wanted the second.
"Oh," he said, "Prevnar isn't a pneumonia vaccine. It's a vaccine against the virus that causes pneumonia. Is that what you want?'
I told him it was and asked if I could schedule the second dose of Twinrix.
He said, "I have to know, do you want the Hepatitis A or the Hepatitis B?"
I said I wanted the second dose of Twinrix.
He said, "yes, but do you want the Hepatitis A or the Hepatitis B?"
I said, "since it's called Twinrix, I'm guessing both."
"No," he said, "the second dose of Twinrix is only one. Do you want the Hepatitis A or the Hepatitis B?"
I said, "I dunno. Hep B?"
He replied, "the second dose of Twinrix is Hepatitis A. Is that what you want?"

I'm getting a new doctor.

Niles replaced my previous MD, and I have found him to be extremely unhelpful. He always makes me feel like I'm imposing on his time, and that whatever I'm there for isn't important enough to matter to him. He won't deal with more than one issue per appointment. If you need prescription refills AND have a physical issue, he'll write the refills and say to make another appointment for the other issue. If you mention you're hurting because of something, he shows absolutely no compassion. He mumbles, and speaks so quietly I'm constantly asking him to speak up or repeat himself. He also forgets to check my chart regarding medications I'm allergic to and re-prescribes them. I'm currently looking for a different Dr.

My husband went to see Dr Niles, and I was in attendance, we didn't have a clue what questions he was asking, couldn't understand a word. He didn't appear interested. Dr Niles sent him for blood and urine tests though. But we didn't have much confidence in him. Have found another Dr. in Nanaimo since.
