I credit Dr. Shafranov with saving my eyesight after a locum operated and ruined it. He was very knowledgeable. He could rant on at times but I trusted in his skills. When I was very scared he even patted me on the shoulder and said things would be fine. He’ll never know how much that helped my anxiety. I was very fortunate he was in the right place at the right time.

Saw him for issues with my eyes. Thought he was very good with treating/removing my cataracts. He was knowledgeable but I did feel a bit intimidated by him. He can be rude and abrupt at times. I think that this can be because he is from Russia. (No offense.) He's a 'matter of fact' kind of guy, straight up and has NO TIME FOR B.S. It seemed to me that when he left Connecticut, it was rather sudden and with very little warning. (Received a letter in the mail that he had closed up and left town.) In conclusion, he's a very knowledgeable and a good Doctor. Warm and fuzzy he isn't.

One of the most caring, compassionate, and empathetic doctor's I've ever met. Gave me all the time I needed to answer my questions and settle my fears and concerns. I was actually shocked (and very happy!) to learn that such a renowned expert in the field of ophthalmology & glaucoma is practicing right here in Maine. (Most probably have no idea he's here!) So very lucky to have found him. His staff was friendly. Both he & his technician were very patient with all my questions. I was in the waiting area for only 5-10 minutes. They got me right in. My regular doctor actually referred me to a different doctor for a 2nd opinion. I did my own research and found Dr. Shafranov on my own. I was super impressed by his resume and decided to ignore my regular doctor. Saw him instead. Best decision I ever made!

I have never been treated so horribly. This man is the most condescending, rude, and unhelpful person I've ever seen. I've never left anywhere so quickly, told the staff to cancel my next appointments cus I will never be back. He wouldn't listen to me, talked over me, treated me like I was an idiot, and told me he didn't believe the diagnosis that my rheumatologist gave me.
He was literally the most abrasive and condescending person I've ever dealt with. Didn't even answer the questions I came in for. Do NOT go to this doctor.

I was one of his patients in North Carolina. The review below does not describe the doctor I know. He is an excellent doctor. Over the last five months, I saw Dr Shafranov at least 10 times including 2 surgeries. I have Fuchs and both surgeries could not have gone better. He treated me with compassion and professionalism. I completely trusted his with my eyes and he never let me down. Anyone who has Dr Shafranov as a doctor will have the best.

He is very rude! The way he talks to his staff in North Carolina is ridiculous. He should be ashamed of his unprofessionalism. I have never heard of a doctor speaking to his staff in the open for everyone in the entire office to be able to hear or for the things he says. Someone should really file a hostile work claim against him or heck maybe even harassment charges for some of the things he says.

He needs to stop telling people the will go blind eventually and that only he can help them. He often says he is retiring and rants on about how the insurance companies don't pay him enough. He is dealing with people's eyesight and they are worried. He needs to focus on patient care.

Get a second opinion before letting him touch your eye! I made a very bad choice because I trusted his so called excellent reputation. He was not honest with explaining the details of the procedure (Baerveldt) and my eye looks and feels nothing like I had expected. My eyelid gets caught on the sloppy mess of sclera tissue he patched it with. Sclera from a cadaver, which he also failed to mention! Patients may want heads up on that one! Following the surgery, he didn't want to listen to me. He became rude, abrasive and anxious to get my other eye under his knife. I never went back . There are many specialists with new technology and professional manners out there. Please go to one of them!
