My 9 year old broke her radius and ulna at gymnastics. Of course, the local hospital only gave us two names for nearby orthopedic surgeons, which is ludicrous because there are more than just Dr. Brown in NWI.I learned this later, unfortunately. Don't be fooled by the referral list suggesting that he is the end all to be all of pediatric orthopedic surgeons. There are far better. Find them.
Not only is his bedside manner terrible, but he set my child's arm with absolutely zero pain meds. A 9 year old. It was a nightmare. If that wasn't bad enough, he made it seem like she was a baby for crying and being scared to death for further visits. He set it incorrectly and made us come back to try and put a wedge in. When that was causing intense pain, I demanded it be removed and something else be done WITH medication. So the second time he went to set it they gave her a numbing shot(I found out from the new surgeon that there is no way to numb that particular break and she should have been put to sleep). So my child was put through hell multiple times in his office. The only people worth a damn there are most of his nurses and office staff. They are kind. One nurse had his same demeanor and should work with adults and not children.
During one visit, while my daughter was in intense pain, he made us sit and listen to his cell phone conversation with his son about vacation and golfing. I can't make this up. He answered his phone in our room while nurses were standing there waiting for orders from him to xray my daughter.
We never looked back after the second bone setting without any sedation. She is now traumatized and suffering PTSD with doctors. We found Dr. Kucharzyk in Crown Point and he is 100 times better. He said he never does anything of that nature without sedation and agrees she is suffering trauma from her experience. Now when I have to take her into the doctor, she literally shakes and gets intense stomach aches. She has always be very tough and loved going to the doctor. She never feared any doctors till now. Do yourself and your child a favor, and please go elsewhere. I implore you to look elsewhere so no other child has to go through what my daughter went through.
Dr. Kucharzyk said her arm still isn't set perfectly and we could either do surgery or wait since her bones are still malleable. We chose to let time heal them correctly due to her trauma which means we are looking at 3-6 months before they are back to normal and she can even consider gymnastics again .
