I've been a patient of Dr Bharmal for years. I like the way he talks to me, no nonsense straightforward, he doesn't sugar coat anything which is what I like and need. He's not rude but will tell it like it is. I find him very professional; I enjoy my consultations and checkup visits.

After being hospitalized for a week with sudden heart issues, I was referred to Dr. Bharmal. He didn’t bother to read anything about my file, he did not listen to any of my concerns and after finding that my blood pressure was still high and my heart was behaving abnormally for my age, he simply told me that, “it’s not normal but you should be fine.” That would have been bad enough but he proceeded to body shame me for marks from past experiences I had with depression. Not only did he do nothing to help but he insulted me and made me feel horrible in an already scary situation. I would never recommend him to anyone.

I’ve also knocked down my rating for staff/punctuality because they contacted me a week before my appointment to make sure I knew where the clinic was and when I arrived, I overheard that they weren’t expecting me in person. After driving over 3 hours, I had to sit and wait a while before they would take me and they didn’t have the courtesy to tell me why.

I wish I could give this guy a zero rating, but the scale doesn’t go that low.

Shortly before Christmas my husband was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation for which he was hospitalized for approximately 10 days in Saint Albert. Upon discharge he was set up with an appointment with Bharmal.

A little bit of cursory research on this guy revealed that he isn’t even a cardiologist. We thought, “OK… Well, we don’t have much of a choice so we will see him”. On the very first visit he prescribed what is known to be one of the most dangerous drugs going, Amiodarone. If you want a frightening bedtime story… Read about this stuff.

It is a drug prescribed for ventricular fibrillation, so he was prescribing it as an off label use. It is so dangerous that you are actually supposed to be hospitalized to be started on it. Additionally, this drug is supposed to be used as a “last resort after everything else has been tried for life-threatening ventricular fibrillation“. All of this information is right in the drug information pamphlet… Which we were neither given by the doctor or the dispensing pharmacy, but had to look it up online ourselves.

After reading this, my husband and I decided that maybe this was not a drug that we wanted to start with.

Today, my husband went in for a follow up appointment with Bharmal. He basically fired my husband as a patient, telling him that if he “would not take this particular medication, there was no point in him coming back”.

We are aware that there are other anti-arrhythmic drugs available. My husband is actually currently on digoxin anyway.

Just wow. Is this guy getting some sort of financial incentive for prescribing this particular drug?
Awful, awful doctor Who can’t see around his huge ego and will absolutely not listen to his patients concerns or work with them. It’s his way or the highway, apparently.

If you are referred to this doctor for a heart condition… I strongly recommend that you don’t even bother wasting your time going to the first appointment. Start looking for another cardiologist… That actually is educated in cardiology.

Aweful Doctor had two seperate incidences with him. Rudeness, and lack of professionnalism are among a few that I have experienced. NOT Recommended !

I'm just glad I saw him when I did, he picked up something "not quite right" on my stress test and I had two stents installed at the Royal Alec, three weeks later. Excellent Doctor!!

Dr Bharmal is the clumsiest and rudest "professional" I have had in my past. Instead of listening to the concerns I had he insulted me on my weight which he knew was grossly caused by the surgeries and pills he had recommended. He continually tried to treat me for diabetes, which is and has been in excellent control and for which I see a specialist. He told me to leave the office when I said i would not see him for my diabetes nor would I listen to his advice on the subject because I simply did not trust his opinion on such things. Now this happened long ago, 6 years but after finding this site I am hoping people can use the information. people come to doctors for help and treatment-Not to be talked down to like we are idiots. (by the way I am a physician myself but he could care less about my own opinions)
