Biography
Professional Statement As my patient, you can expect confidentiality and a comprehensive medical assessment at your first appointment. I treat all psychiatric conditions including depression, anxiety, stresses caused by work, relationships, illness and other difficulties that life presents. Together we will create treatment goals and develop strategies to help improve your symptoms and reach your full potential. My goal is to help you understand your feelings, heal from your psychiatric conditions, and gain overall health and balance in your life. Sometimes, this involves psychotherapy, sometimes medication, sometimes a combination of both. In my 35 years of experience, I have developed a balanced approach to integrating psycho-pharmacology into the whole spectrum of available treatments. Because I am sensitive to the fears and hesitations that some have when a medication is being considered, patients can be assured that alternatives may be presented, side effects explained, and compliance issues discussed. I consider you as a whole person when making decisions and we will explore treatment options that work uniquely for you. There are many additional therapeutic options available in Flagstaff which I may be able to recommend where indicated, including counselors, other behavior health professionals, medical specialists, exercise, dietary changes, massage, meditation, and other therapies. I am an active medical staff member of Flagstaff Medical Center, so that if you require hospitalization, I am able to collaborate with your attending physician. I trained in psychiatry at the University of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Institute of Psychiatry. I served as a Military Psychiatrist for two years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Landstuhl, Germany. My patients find that I am an active listener, compassionate, warm, knowledgeable, collaborative, results-oriented, and able to suggest creative and practical solutions. I am able to conduct an appointment in English, Spanish, or Italian. To schedule an appointment, please call my office (928) 773-0010. I accept many insurances and my office manager will be able to discuss any billing questions you may have. We will send you the new patient forms.

One of, if not the best psychiatrist in Flagstaff, AZ and surrounding areas. My daughter had to be inpatient at Flagstaff Medical Center when she was 18 on the behavioral health ward. Since I worked in the Behavioral Health department, no counselors would see her because they were "uncomfortable". Dr. Figueroa not only got her on the correct medication for her depression and monitored that, he also saw her every day, at least twice for 1 hour for therapy on his own. I do not know of any psychiatrist who would do that, not because he was asked, but really cared about my daughter. He really helped change her life around. He also saw her the next day after she was released from the hospital, something that NEVER happens in Arizona mental health.
He also keeps apts. open for emergencies if a patient needs to come to FMC emergency room if seeing the patient the next day will safely help divert a hospitalization.
Their staff are all friendly, professional and know how to work with your insurances. Having this combination when you are looking for a psychiatrist is so important as we often are anxious, nervous and not at our best when looking for a psychiatrist.
I myself, suffer from a rare form of arthritis and neuropathy that has resulted in having to have 5 major joints replaced (knees, hip, shoulders) before I was 50. As you can imagine, this has been the source of severe depression for me over the years. Dr. Figueroa has been there for me for over 10 years, through thick and thin, helping me understand my feelings around this, having to quit work and be on disability.
He has literally saved my life on several occasions when the pain was so great that I just did not want to be here anymore.
