Biography
Dr. John Antoniou is a full tenured Professor of Surgery and Research Director of the McGill University’s Division of Orthopaedic Surgery. He graduated from McGill medical school in 1991, McGill Orthopaedic residency in 1997 and McGill PhD in experimental surgery in 1999. He completed three fellowships in Seattle (University of Washington), Chicago (Rush), and Philadelphia (Penn) respectively before returning to work at McGill University. He is a member of the Royal college of Surgeons of Canada, a US board certified Orthopaedic surgeon, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic surgeons. He was invited to present his work in over 250 international conferences, workshops symposiums and courses, and over 500 abstracts were presented at national and international meetings. He published and co-authored over 200 original articles in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Antoniou has recently served as the president of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, president of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society, he is chair of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association’s communications committee and chair of the Orthopaedic Research Society’s Collaborations Council. He is a scientific reviewer for journals, conferences, grant task forces and serves on several editorial boards along with being recipient of several national and international prestigious awards including the FRSQ’s chercheur national. His clinical focus is the treatment of active patients with arthritic hips and knees. He uses the smallest and most durable implants to treat these patients. Alternate bearing technology with bone preserving stems represent the latest in hip replacement technology and have revolutionized the treatment of the high demand patients. He is a worldwide leader in performing hip resurfacing arthroplasty. This technique is highly bone preserving while allowing the patient to return to an active lifestyle. Many high-level athletes have turned to hip resurfacing in order to keep competing at the highest level. Dr. Antoniou is a member of the hip society. An honour bestowed on 80 of the top hip surgeons in the world. This is a recognition by his international peers of the importance and quality of the work he performs at McGill University. He has been in clinical practice for over 21 years and has performed over 10,000 hip and knee replacements over the years. He trains fellow surgeons, fellows, residents, medical students, Masters and PhD Students in the latest techniques in Hip and knee replacement surgery.
