Rokaw refused to evaluate me for a documented health risk in my immediate family. He also tried to correct my referral code, claiming to personally know on sight that I am not transgender, then proceeded to mock his other transgender patients as "too sensitive", "difficult", and "unhappy with their results." While he did not violate confidentiality, denigrating his patients was wildly unprofessional, and denigrating a marginalized group as a whole should disqualify him from treating them. He directly advised me to reconsider hormone replacement therapy due to aesthetic concerns (his, not mine). Calling someone too attractive to transition borders on harassment. He claimed that I needed referral letters to pursue HRT, which is untrue in California, and his office had told me when I made the appointment that Rokaw practiced informed consent. Did he misrepresent himself as experienced in gender affirming care deliberately, or did his office merely check a box since he practices endocrinology? His receptionist certainly said he was "one of the best gender specialists in the city" when I made the appointment, and he clearly had trans HRT patients about whom to complain. I'll add that his information about hormone regimens approved by the Endocrine Society was outdated. I'm given to understand he primarily works with one specialty anymore, as he sent a mass letter to patients dropping them from his practice. But even his patients for whom this treatment would not be relevant should be aware how he speaks about patients behind their backs. He ignored my medical concerns, interrupted and spoke over me even though I was being polite and soft-spoken, mocked my apparent medical knowledge vis-a-vis his own, and told an off-color joke all before he found out I was transgender. He also didn't look at my notes ahead of time (or indeed until partway into the appointment), the wait was interminable, their phone system frustrating.
