My Father was referred to Dr. Berry for surgery due to a stomach tumor. We, (patient and immediate family) were told the treatment could not be simple removal of the tumor but due the type of tumor which would have "fingers" reaching through the stomach lining, the entire stomach would have to be removed. The "fix" for this would be to create a new stomach from the large intestine, feeding tube in place for a few weeks to gain strength and weight, and then began chemotherapy or radiation. Dr. Berry appeared to indicate this was a routine procedure and immediately after the surgery said he didn't think my dad would have lasted more than 8 weeks without the surgery. He lasted around 6 weeks which consisted of an agonizing time. He told me more than once he wished he had never had the surgery. He walked into the hospital on his own and never was the same. After he died, Berry had it set for the death certificate to read complications from prostate cancer. He had had a complete prostate removal around 25 years prior! I had to contact the hospice director to be sure the death certificate read correctly.

He operated on my mother for infection in her abdomen. He had to go in a week later--gave two different reasons for the decision. A couple of weeks later she had to be intubated and spent six months in intensive care on a respirator. She finally woke up and was left bedridden for the rest of her life. Was it Berry's fault? I don't know but he would not give answers to us, joked and smiled about the surgery results and bragged about how much he loved to cut on people. We fired him. I would also say that MS Baptist Med Center was the hospital. She got some serious infections there. During her final visit before she died in the ICU, I had to wipe up someone else's blood off the floor under her bed because the room hadn't been cleaned adequately. On her first visit when she ended up in the ICU, I bought some cleaners and scrubbed her room. They don't allow the cleaning staff enough time to actually do a thorough job of cleaning. I hate to say anything against their cleaning staff--I am sure they are paid minimum wage and timed. It's profit, profit, profit all the way for Baptist. IT is not a charity.
If you go, be sure to wipe down all surfaces with a bleach based cleaner. I wouldn't go to MS Baptist for anything but to visit a patient. There are better surgeons to be found.

I'm surprised about the bad reviews - I think he was great. The appointments and surgery were very punctual, he explained everything I wanted to know and the surgery went off extremely well. It's exactly two weeks to the day since my hernia repair and I feel great.

I had a bad case of diverticulitis that resulted in a small bowel perforation (at age 33). My GI doc referred me to Dr. Berry to perform the colon resection. He removed 3 feet of my colon. Though I had complications (no fault of his), he was very concerned about my condition, checked on me daily and made sure that I knew what my options were. I trust Dr. Berry's judgement and would recommend him to my family and friends. I met many doctors who were on call during my hospital stay, and Dr. Berry (as well as Dr. Haick) were the most personable, which really helps during recovery. His office staff are also very warm and helpful.

Dr Scott Berry saved my life! He noticed it was just not my gallbladder, I could have died from gangrene infection from an infarcted omentum if he was not observant and only focused on my gallbladder! My 3 children owe him for saving me! I would recommend Dr Scott Berry, he is wonderful!

I was diagnosed with colon cancer at relative young age. Scott Berry was my surgeon, he did not show up on my scheduled surgery date and did not notify any of his staff and team doctors. Later, we found that he was dealing with his personal issue. He abandoned his patient and had very bad attitude about it. The worst thing was he did not apologize for his unprofessional behavior and did not even do the referral. The vice-president of the hospital contacted the GI doctor and referred me another surgeon. I do not deserve more pain and suffering caused by Scott Berry's unethical behavior. One thing that I regretted that the day before my surgery, I did not listen to the advise that he was a “bad” surgeon, commented by my friend who was his patient with bad experience... Do not use him, what kind of evidence better than my case?

I went in the hospital for emergency hyst. my ob-gyn slipt up and cut my bowels open. A Surgeon was called in to fix this. All the records list Dr. Scott Berry as the surgeon. He sae not the one whom performed this surgery. His partner Dr. Hiac did. I ended up sith I steff infection and had to go to the E.R. Dr. Berry was brought in. The man bedside manner was horrible. I was in agony and crying, I could not sit down. This DOCTOR told me to "Shut up you are not in that much pain," then he pushed me down on the bed. When he took a look, he realized just how bad the infection was and I was in the hospital a week. What would you think of a doctor like that. No apology or anything. This something I will NEVER forget.

I have used Dr. Berry for two surgeries and been very pleased with the results. He has been VERY supportive for me. You would think I was his only patient that day. I felt like he understood what I was experiencing and would definitely go to him again.
