Two words: surprise billing. I am new to town and found Dr. Baumgartner on a list of providers taking new patients. I found him and his assistant Pepper to be very pleasant. The appt was longer than expected and he did not complete a physical exam which surprised me, just bloodwork. I was told the blood work would be ~$200-300 and if it would be more or not covered by insurance, that they would notify me and I could cancel it/request it not be completed. I thought that this was reasonable, and appreciated the explanation. I was excited to have found a new doctor that I liked in a new town so quickly. At the end of the visit I scheduled a follow-up. However before the date of that follow-up appointment, I received two bills for the one visit. One for ~$350 and another for about ~$1350, totaling just over $1700. I was shocked - I assumed that they didn’t bill my insurance at all. When I called, I found that they had in fact billed my insurance using a code that was not covered. They had not attempted to rebill insurance. Instead they sent me a bill for the entirety. I called to request that they rebill or negotiate a lower boll total since this is a surprise bill. They have not attempted to negotiate a lower amount and they assured me they would now rebill my insurance (actually, they first req’d I call my insurance and ask them to cover it. This is not how insurance works which they would know better than me even, why that step was necessary is unclear. perhaps they just have billing agents ask patients to do irrelevant activities to tire them out). I have not heard an update regarding the insurance resolution but I have received harassing calls and mail in the meantime about ‘overdue balances’. To complicate this, they will not address the two bills in one call, as they are from ‘different entities’, another way that makes dealing with the surprise bill difficult. Avoid unless you have deep pockets and are unconcerned about balance bills!
