I saw Dr. Fiel in 2017. I was 30, had been surgically (laparoscopy) diagnosed with endometriosis by another OB/GYN (now retired) in 2004 and had 2 surgeries for Ovarian tumours. My periods had completely stopped and it was not due to peri-menopause or menopause as confirmed by blood work from my family doctor. Dr. Fiel did a basic exam and told me to “lose 10lbs and you’ll be fine,” despite the knowledge and SURGICAL records of my past history. I lost way more weight (unintentionally, due to this illness) and things only got worse. Fast forward, I went 3 years straight without a period and in 2020, I became extremely ill, needed multiple hospitalizations and am currently completely disabled at age 35. The devastation I feel is something I cannot put into words. It seems that Doctors in Canada have no accountability or are not required to hold any responsibility when their own negligence, attitude/bias effects the standard of care of they provide to patients, leaving the patient to deal with the detriments to their own health. The physical issues are more than enough to try and cope with, but the mental and emotional trauma I’m left to deal with has had a great impact on me. Illness and disability effect your entire life; work, education, relationships, finances. It hurts me to think that this could have been prevented if she had just listened and done her due-diligence as a medical professional. I want her to know that despite being a doctor and having the privileges of that profession, it does not make her immune to disease. Anyone can become sick at the drop of a hat, and sometimes, your privileges won’t matter. I just hope that if her, a family member, a friend, need medical attention, they will not experience the type of “care” that she gave to me. I hope that any potential patients do their research and use critical thinking skills when making a decision to see this OB/GYN. You can usually tell which reviews are from disgruntled patients and which ones are genuine. If you do see Dr. Fiel, I truly hope that your experience is better than mine.
