Biography

Dr. Jonathan Kaplan is a board certified Orthopedic Surgeon fellowship trained to treat patients with foot and ankle injuries and conditions. A native of Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Kaplan attended college at Illinois Wesleyan University where he graduated Cum Laude majoring in Chemistry and Spanish. He attended the University of Illinois College of Medicine, graduating with honors as well as being selected for the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society, The Chancellor's Student Service Leadership Award, and the Alumni Student Service Award. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the Los Angeles County / University of Southern California Medical Center. During this time, he was selected as an American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Resident Scholar, an American Orthopaedic Association Emerging Leader Program Scholar, and earned the USC Senior Outstanding Research Award for his research on Achilles tendon ruptures. After residency, Dr. Kaplan completed a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at the Mercy Medical Center Institute of Foot and Ankle Reconstruction with world renowned surgeon Dr. Mark Myerson as well as Dr. Clifford Jeng, Dr. John Campbell, and Dr. Rebecca Cerrato. He is currently a partner at the Orthopaedic Specialty Institute in Orange. He has a passion for working with athletes as well as minimally invasive surgery of the foot and ankle including minimally invasive bunion correction, minimally invasive Achilles tendon repair, arthroscopy of the ankle / subtalar joint / hallux (big toe), and other small joints of the foot. Additionally, he is on the forefront of minimally invasive bunion correction, arthritis treatment, and deformity correction, not only as a clinician but also as an instructor in these techniques. He is one of the few orthopedic surgeons performing ankle replacements in Orange County. Outside of his practice he tries to remain very active academically. His research interests include foot and ankle injuries in the athlete, ankle arthritis, great toe arthritis, and malalignment / deformities in the foot and ankle. He has numerous publications in peer review journals, book chapters, and even serves as an Assistant Editor for the journal Foot & Ankle Orthopaedics. He currently serves on the research committee for the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his wife Liz, who is a Colorectal Surgeon in Orange County. Hobbies include hiking, golf and weight lifting. He loves watching almost all sports, especially most Chicago teams (except the Cubs of course!). He has a strong affinity for animals and once had an English Bulldog named Carl.
