Dr. Spencer is (presumably) a technically competent — i.e., capable/qualified — ophthalmologist but his interactive (communicative) skills are woefully lacking. There's a certain arrogance about him when talking to a patient that is manifested as patronizing. He tells me that my vision has this or that characteristic but isn't very interested in how I 'see' my visual problems. He's either dismissive of my perspective or ignores what I have to say altogether. After several years of being Dr. Spencer's patient for my recent cataract surgery I was transferred to Dr. Yearsley, Personally I'd prefer to have him as my assigned ophthalmologist. I am that dissatisfied with Dr. Spencer.

On time efficient and very pleasant staff. Other offices should treatpatients like they do. Very pleased.

I have been a patient of DR/ Spencer's for several years. On my very first visit I told him that both my Mom and Dad had Macular Degeneration. Every time I had an appointment with DR. Spencer I asked about my vision , he would say it was my age [80] My Parkinsons and my history of migraines. This was on July 30, 2022 . On Aug. 27 I went to the urgent care in Parksville because we thought I had a stroke . They sent me to Nanaimo Hosp. The great staff found me a eye doctor right a way. I was referred me to a doctor in Duncan. I had quite a few test that i have never had with Dr. Spencer, after two hours of testing The doctor told me I have Macular Degeneration in both eyes. I am now having treatment once a month in Duncan. If only i ha d seen him earlier I would have a better out come. Doctor Spencer always made me feel as if I was just an old lady that want's attention. Right now I can't see much out of my right eye. We live in Qualicum Beach.

Shockingly unprofessional. Barely attended to me. I had been sitting and waiting for several minutes in a barely private area. I thought he was a patient or some other random observer when he eventually walked over from the wall with the person he was talking to and began speaking to me. I was bewildered and I asked who he was, and if he knew where the doctor was. He said he was the doctor. He was dressed in a Hawaiian shirt, shorts and sandals. The other person wore a T-shirt.

He and his younger colleague talked only to each other for the whole time except a couple instances when I asked multiple times for information regarding my health. The rest of the time, they stood around me and chatted about vacation and travel. The younger one interjected with an inappropriate comment about the primary physician that had seen me, when I mentioned her. I was a minor.

They (both) barely looked at me, mostly just stood talking to themselves, and performed no tests. The younger one, who did not examine me at all, randomly grabbed my shoulder and put on some act to appear like an authority figure. He said one very vague and utterly unhelpful sentence, that there are some issues but otherwise everything looks great.

I had severe eye damage, was in a lot of constant pain and my condition was affecting everything in my life. The damage and condition were visibly pronounced and looked terrible. At the time, it was still early in the progression of the damage and injuries. Had he / they actually done their job, I wouldn't have had to suffer for years longer, nearly going blind, and never get proper treatment, leading to further damage and injuries.

Dr.Spencer is without a doubt one of the most rude and arrogant , even verbally abusive doctors I have ever seen. I was referred to him by my family doctor for an annoying eye inflammation my dr said he might decide to lance under the lid.He comments were demeaning and belitttling. He intimated that I was seeing him for something innocuous and when I asked a question he said, “You seniors are always putting things in your eyes so it’s probably that.” He then proceeded to reprimand me. To my mute astonishment he proceeded to raise his voice , dismiss my eye condition and insinuate I had no reason to be there. I felt so bad I got up, said thank you ( why? I don’t know) and leave feeling so bad for even seeing him. I recommend that you see any other opthamologist of your choice. I will never go to him again. I am writing this review in order to save anyone from the experience I had.
