I had a knee replacement last August '15. After one call to my wife the day of the surgery, I never saw or talked to the doctor in the hospital. Pain management was terrible. After two weeks, I developed a red, swollen knee. called the office (which is a nightmare) and was seen that day, by the PA, not the doctor. I had red discharge running down my knee by this time. The PA proceeded to try to extract fluid from my knee which was extremely painful. My leg was wrapped and I was sent home with an appointment for the following TUESDAY! this was the previous Thursday. I was in a lot of pain, barely able to walk. On Friday I got a call to go to the hospital on Saturday morning to have the knee opened to clean out the infection. After more agony, I went home on an IV pic line for antibiotics for 6 weeks. Then oral antibiotics. I continued to deal with the office staff (terrible), and after 9 months of pain and discomfort, the doc said my knee was lose and I would need more surgery. I called The Rothman Institute in Philadelphia and after a visit there, was told my prosthetic was not the best fit for me and it was indeed lose and needed to be replaced. I am now scheduled for a third surgery for a totally new knee replacement. Hopefully this will be my last. worth a trip out of the area for good care.

I was very impressed with Dr. Schmaltz at my consultation appointment. He was very patient, explained the procedure and pain management very well, and also allowed us to ask several questions. He is definately NOT a doctor with his "hand on the doorknob", allowing the minimal time for questions. The surgery went very well. He is obviously very talented and an expert at minimally invasive surgery. My physical therapist told me I had "the most beautiful incisions"!! He performed bi-lateral hip replacements, and I walked the next morning with my walker in the hospital! At 6 weeks, I'm walking without assistance of a cane, able to drive my car, and carefully doing household chores. I highly recommend Dr. Schmaltz for joint replacement surgery. His nurse Evanne and Physician Assistant Mary were also wonderful for answering questions and allay any concerns. The New Steps floor at Community Hospital in Scranton is also the best! Roz (N.J.)

Doctor Schmaltz and his staff are top notch in every phase of our experience. My husband had bi-lateral knee replacement. Dr. Schmaltz pain management was outstanding. The pain was very minimal. After 5 days my husband was walking extremely well and going up and down 16 stairs in our home with no trouble.
