If you have diabetes and have never met with an endocrinologist, I would strongly urge you visit one. Because they specialize in diabetes, these MD's are up to date on the latest treatments for both Type I and Type II diabetes. I was refered to Dr Spatola 9 years ago, shortly after I'd been diagnosed with diabetes at age 39. Dr Spatola is the Medical Director of St Joseph Hospital's Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metablolic Services. She's worked with me on my evolving needs and concerns, and guided me (without pushing me) into newer treatments that have had great benefit to my blood sugar control. She encourages some exercise and better food choices, along with medicine, that together have helped me avoid the complications that come with uncontrolled blood sugar levels; my A1C is 6.6. Her team includes a dietician and Certified Diabetes Educator, and more great staff. I have selected insurance companies at work based on whether they cover Dr Spatola--she's that key to my wellness.
