Great 1st impression when my boyfriend was with me, giving us hope. He said he knew how limiting Narcolepsy was. Asking abt my med coverage, which I had none bc I lost it when I had to stop my job bc of my Narcolepsy. He said he was in the business of helping people get better not so he could get rich. Next 3 apps by myself were disappointing. 2nd Appt, he spent mainly describing his frustration with aggressive apnea devices salesmen. I was being polite & tried to steer him back to my health but he just kept on until he kind of snapped out of it & 5 mins discussing my health. 3rd, he was saying I needed to have health insurance so I needed to get a job. I told him how I had to stopped working bc Narcolepsy symptoms. I informed him I applying for disability bc I so I'd be eligible for/get Medicaid. Responded that I should be able to find some job. I told him I was struggling just to take care of myself. He said maybe my dad could "employ" me @ his company so I could med insurance. I said no. He said he didn't know what he could do for me w/o insurance. I was planning on just continuing the same meds until I got Medicaid then we could try other options. He said I needed to retake my sleep study there (which was of poor quality) but with Cataplexy, I asked why? He changed subject to wrap up & end the Appt. 4th, he asked me "you're in college, right?" No. Working? No. Well, there are many training programs, you need to find some work w/ benefits, "I can't treat you if you don't have insurance" I started crying bc I was confused & stunned & hurt. I had told him 3 times that I had to stop working at the well paid job I loved bc of Narcolepsy symptoms. I told him my dad was willing to loan me money to get meds & treatment until I got Medicaid so what was the problem? He sighed and said if I didn't know the answer to that by now, then there was nothing he could do for me. Me: You want me to take another sleep study. He wrote out the order for another sleep study @ his lab & instructed they charge me Medicaid rates. As he wrote out my prescriptions, he said I could only see him once more bc I don't have medical coverage. I was dumbfounded as was his medical assistant & intern. They both said sorry, they don't know why he said that and mentioned he was very stressed lately. I was confused, hurt, & disappointed by this doctor. I waited 3 & a half months for a new patient appt w/ another doctor to treat my Narcolepsy & Cataplexy. Went 2 weeks horrible without meds but now have a great doc that has put me on a new med (free through PPA) & I am doing better. Said a new sleep study wasn't necessary with the Cataplexy.
