I couldn't get into my regular podiatrist (both on vacation at the same time...) and was given his name. He has no association with the facility I usually go to but my InstaCare told me to see someone NOW as I have ANOTHER infected tow (I have already lost 2). I got right in with Dr. Martin, things seemed ok. His staff is excellent, I was impressed with them and with Dr. Martin. He did tell me he could assist me with my hammer toe and do laser treatments for my peripheral neuropathy that would help pain, feeling, etc. Of course I was excited, after fighting chronic pain for over 15 years, the thought of anything helping gave me so much hope. I saw him for 2 months. At first he said the toe did not have any signs of bone infection. He gave me one course of antibiotics and had me soaking the toe twice daily (warm water, Epsom salts) and I did this faithfully. The toe was NOT improving at all, in fact, it did start looking worse. Dr. Martin went on vacation for 8 or 9 days, I saw him before he left and he did not re-xray the foot or do anything to ensure it would be ok while he was gone (at least x-ray it, give me more antibiotics and give me the name of another Dr. for me to follow up with since the toe was not improving in the slightest...) Nope, nothing. A couple of days later the toe looked horrible so I went to my original Podiatrist and he told me "I'm pretty sure it has progressed to osteomyelitis, I can see the bone, you need an MRI and immediately stop the soaks (infections thrive in warm, moist environments...) When Dr. Martin got back from vacation I told him the status and he wanted to schedule me the next Monday to remove what he could of the toe IN HIS OFFICE. I am a post-transplant patient (kidney/pancreas with ZERO immune system) and that struck me as very odd. Didn't ask me about who I had seen, who my transplant team was, what IV antibiotics I was on or anything about my home health (I had a picc line inserted and am giving myself IV antibiotics every 6 hours to make the toe as healthy as possible for amputation). Left me shocked at his lack of concern. I asked him to call the Dr. I had seen (who ordered the MRI) and he brushed me off. Turns out he never did bother to call them. I told him cancel everything, nothing is going to happen until I talk to my Nephrologist. I did and HE was shocked at the approach "Doctor" Martin was taking. Dr. Martin said he was certain the bone was infected before he had gone on vacation... A fact he failed to mention to me, otherwise I would have gone to someone else BEFORE the toe started looking worse. I am disgusted and disappointed with Dr. Martin. There is a small chance I could have at least saved the toe but now it is too late. Not sure how much will be removed but what's gone is GONE. I don't think I'd take this person's word at face value. If you see him, GET A SECOND OPINION and don't sit around and wait for HIM to decide what to do. I will regret my mistake (and his negligence) for the rest of my life.
