Dr. Ostrup did a excellent job putting my skull cap back in. I had a severe head injury where I bled in all three levels in the brain and was in induced comma for 2 in 1/2 weeks. I was in Santa Barbara when this happened and there was known Neurosurgeon there who has is one of 35 of the best in the world. His name is Dr. Zauner and I went back to the hospital to meet him since I don't remember being there for 1 month before I was transferred to San Diego. Dr. Zauner wanted to put the skull cap back in, but my insurance wouldn't cover it. So Dr. Ostuup put it back in and when I saw Dr .Zuaner to thank him for his excellent work, he said "can I touch your head" (of course where Dr. Ostrup put the cap back in), then he said "I couldn't of done a better job". I believe when another Neurosurgeon who is excellent in their work, compliments another Neurosurgeon it shows that Dr. Ostrup is a great doctor and I would recommend him to anyone who needs his practice.
I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Ostrup&his assistant(Erica) which I been dealing with the last 1-2 months. To piggy back on what some of the others wrote below, Dr. Ostrup was all around great at explaining my situation, how were going to attack it and where I am at now which is the recovery process. To sum things up, A+ as a Dr.& A+ as a person whose very caring, simply looking out for our(YOUR) best interest&to get us to 100% .
As a massage therapist for 37 years, I'm used to being the caregiver. A large herniated disc quickly changed that. I was in excruciating pain. At least 3 doctors and 3 friends referred Dr. Ostrup. Erica, his assistant, is both caring and professional. Dr. Ostrup, treats me like a long time friend, not a new patient, The surgery was a complete success. The intnese leg/nerve pain is gone!
I had been an athlete my entire 47 years engaging in surfing, moutainbiking, karate, gym workouts, yoga, running, skiing, enduro mx, skateboarding and many other sports before i met Dr. Ostrup. My sports were my life. and i can say i'm a fun hog!!! Being healthy, active and pain free was a blessing that i enjoyed and took significant efforts to maintain. After being involved in a car accident in 2011 i developed debilitating neck and right arm pain that sidelined me for 8 months before i underwent surgery (a two level bilateral foramenotemy and lamenectomy ) with Dr. Ostrup. Prior to being referred to Dr. Ostrup i had been under the care of a chiropractor. an accupuncturist, a physical therapist, a pain MD and a well know Orthopedic Surgeon from UCSD. My recommended treatment plan with the Pain DR and Ortho were steroidal injections and a two level fusion because i was told i had two herniated discs and a severely degenerated neck. I had lost significant function in my right arm preventing me from surfing, i had developed chronic neck pain and i was depressed. Fortunately, I sought a third opinion with Dr. Ostrup after a prominent Chiropractor(,Dr. K) friend of mine urged me to see him. At our first meeting Dr. Ostrup intelligently and caringly told me what was wrong with my neck. Dr. Ostrup told me that i did not have herniated discs, but that i was suffering from severe stenosis and a congenital narrowing of the spinal canal at two vertebral levels. Dr.Ostrup told me to give the PT a shot and then try to reengage in surfing and my other sports, but if i was not successful in my recovery to get back to him for surgery. I made it clear to Dr.Ostrup that due to my active lifestyle that i wanted to avoid a fusion if at all possible. The PT did not work, the pain got worse and now both of my arms were being affected. I underwent a three plus hour surgery and when i awoke the terrible nerve pain was GONE! The recovery from the surgery was nothing compared to the pain i had suffered from. Today i am three years post surgery, i am pain free and my strength has returned incredibly! I am forever grateful to Dr. Ostrup's for his expertise and care in the repair of my neck. THANK YOU DR. OSTRUP.
I wanted to take a moment to help readers understand how wonderful of a Nerosurgian Dr. Ostrup is. I have spinalstinoius and I have undergone prior experimental surgery from the late Dr.Waltz whom used artificial gel disk back in 2007. After needing to find another Nerosurgeon that was familiar with such uncommon parcigures I was referred to Dr. Ostrup. When I met Dr. Ostrup I knew that his experience and knowledge and understanding demenor he was the right person for the job if I wanted to continue walking and lead a productive life. I want to personally thru this blog "Thank you so much Dr. Ostrup for your amazing ability to give me back my ability to walk again and lead a pain free life for now!!!" oh ya you can barely see the scare how amazing.
I can not say enough about Dr. Ostrup. He had come highly recommended, but he surpassed all expectations. During my initial appointment, Dr. O was very patient listening to my long list of symptoms and he answered an even longer list of questions. He was very empathetic and understanding knowing that I wanted to get back on my bike as soon as possible. He really quelled my anxiety by showing me my mri and taking the time to explain the procedure I would have as well as the kind of recovery I would be facing. There was never a feeling of being rushed. Not only is Dr. Ostrup amazing, Joleeen, his business associate, has been nothing but kind, helpful, and sweet. Dr. Ostrup and Joleen made a difficult situation the best it could possibly be and I am so very thankful for them. They both deserve a rating of 100 stars...they really are that great.
I know Dr Ostrup both as a physician colleague and the surgeon I chose for back surgery in 2007 and again in 2014.
No 9ne knows a physicians capability better than anorger practicing physician in the same community. Prior to, and during my time as his patient, I had the opportunity to be involved with many of his patients care and outcomes, which is why I went to him for my personal care.
I discovered I had a brain tumor in July, and, by the grace of God, met Dr. Ostrup. After five minutes, I knew he was the man for the job, with the highest medical standards and ethics. He is also a very nice person who talked to me and answered my questions. I did not have a single worry about the surgery, and in fact was very calm even as I was wheeled into the OR. Dr. Ostrup worked on me for 9.5 hours, standing the entire time. My follow-up MRI showed no cancer and no tumor remnants. I have had no post-surgery pain, either. I think he is the best neurosurgeon in the world!
I required emergency back surgery because of a herniated disk that had dislodged and was causing my leg and foot to go numb along with pain so intense I could not stand on my feet. Dr. Ostrup was very informative, willing to explain options and risks while having a calm demeanor. I never felt rushed or that he was in a hurry. While I was not awake for the procedure, my wife has been a surgical technician for over 10 years and does operations regularly. She notice Dr. Ostrup's accurate and detailed marking on the operation location; something she says is a good indicator of how a doctor works in the OR. Slow accurate is better than quick and sloppy. She also says the incision is healing very well and was done in a way that will barely be visible once fully healed. Again, something a good surgeon can do. We also asked nursing staff and the other OR team members who they would choose (the only question they can answer) and they said Ostrup.
Back lamenectomy at the L5 in 2003, he also stretch my S1/S2 and I've had debilitating leg pain every since. Dr. Altenau sent me to physical therapy for some resolution after various sessions the therapist was not able to relieve pain and when I went back to Dr. Altenau he recommended I give it time. I went to see Dr Ostrup in 2011, for low back and left leg pain, he could not fine anything causing the pain and recommended I lost 25 lbs. I do not believe either Dr. care about patients who have a difficult problem to correct. SHARP medical works with this group of doctors and would not refer me to any other. I contacted my primary insurance company and they approved a consultation with a Neurologist, who took the time to review my x-rays and MRI recommending surgery because there was bone on bone at the L5, my back pain is 70% improved, but my leg still keeps me up at night 99% of the time. I only wish SHARP and this group of doctors would have cared for their patients better.
