I'm 59 and had prostate cancer (3 spots, 2 on one side, one on the other). My cancer was near the edge near one of the two bundle of nerves governing erectile function. My goals in order of importance: 1. Don't die from prostate cancer; 2. maintain long term normal bowel movements; 3. have normal urinary function; 4. have healthy sex/erectile function. After considering cryotherapy, radioactive seeds, and other alternatives, I chose DaVinci nerve sparing radical prostatectomy. Expected side effects: temporary incontence, loss in the near term and possibly permanently of erectile function (especially since one of the nerve bundles could not be spared given the location of my cancer) I was told that there was a possibility that erectile function could return in whole or in part but that it could take 18 to 24 months. My results: couldnt be better. Cancer completely gone; incontinance gone after 2 weeks; full sexual function returned after 10 months. Dr. Porter was great.

Dr. Porter and his staff ushered me through the terrifying health surprise of having a mass on my kidney. He was able, in record time, to successfully cut out the mass, leaving 2/3 of my remaining healthy kidney in tact. Every step of the way I felt supported by Dr. Porter, Swedish hospital staff, the anesthesiologist and of course, the nurses. What was a very mysterious and scary event, ended up being mysterious and amazing because I did not feel alone. I am so thankful to have been tended so well having been so vulnerable.

Dr. Porter came highly recommended as an expert in the use of the Da Vinci robot to remove cancerous prostates. I met with several doctors before picking Dr. Porter. He had the most experience using this robot with over 2200 procedures. The two main things you worry about (after the cancer) are urinary continence and impotence. Dr. Porter was very attentive to these in our meetings leading up the surgery and made me feel comfortable these were not immaterial issues and he would place the high importance on these items while removing the cancerous prostate. I am fairly young as a prostate cancer patient (at 49) but my urinary continence was restored 4 days after the catheter was removed and my impotence was restored in 4 weeks. I understand these are not normal recovery times but they were with me and I have to give Dr. Porter the credit. If you are in the unfortunate position of having prostate cancer, I believe you would be very fortunate to have Dr. Porter as your surgeon.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in the fall of 2013 and underwent surgery in early February 2014. I chose Dr. Porter because of his excellent reviews, his extensive experience with Da Vinci robotic surgery and the positive impression I received when I met him during my initial appointment. Dr. Porter not only exudes confidence and precision he left me convinced that he truly cared about the outcome of my surgery. He and his team did an outstanding job and my outcome could not be better. Eighteen hours after surgery I walked out of the hospital, I was back at work in about a week and fully continent within 2 weeks (no pads). After 4 months most, if not all, of my pre-surgery sexual function has returned. Best of all, the initial PSA test indicate I’m cancer free.

As a surgeon in my mid 50's, you can bet I fully researched urologic surgeons to perform my prostatectomy. I had a minimally invasive nerve-sparing robotic surgery. Both neurovascular bundles were preserved (these control erections)and my prostate margins were clear (cancer did not spread outside of the prostate). I had very little blood loss, got great care at Swedish, and stayed only one night in the hospital. The nurses were great. My recovery was uncomplicated, and I was given documents that answered all the usual questions, and received good training for catheter care at home. I took regular tylenol for pain after leaving the hospital, and did not require narcotics (although they were prescribed). Dealing with the catheter for a week is annoying, as is the usual "dribbling" afterwards. But I couldn't be more relieved, nor could I be more satisfied with Dr. Porter. When it comes to cancer surgery, you want a surgeon who's done the most with the latest techniques.

70 years old, was diagnosed with a golf ball size kidney tumor. After much research we decided to travel out of State to Swedish Hospital under the care of Dr James Porter. I 100% endorse all the positive comments mentioned and will add the personal attention from Dr Porter from the first personal phone call to his visit in recovery was always first class and professional. I was fortunate that my tumor was benign and Dr Porter saved a major part of the Kidney. I was walking the hospital halls the same day of the surgery. I would be happy to answer any questions or add comments to support the wonderful work of Dr Porter and the Da Vinci Robotics program.

I learned of Dr. Porter by seeking a second opinion to remove a sizable kidney tumor, luckily identified prior to minor heart surgery. He was highly recommended by an RN, my family MD, and my Urologist. The latter told me that Dr. Porter was one of only two surgeons on the West Coast even capable of performing complicated partial nephrectomies using the DaVinci. I called Dr. Porter and heard back from him directly within 24 hours. He was sincere, generous with his time, incisively knowledgeable, encouraging, and exuded confidence. It was a go. He used the DaVinci. I required a radical nephrectomy. I was on my feet that day, left the hospital the next, and was walking five-miles-a-day within 72 hours. I was astonished at how well I felt. Unimaginable. Two weeks later I often forget that I had surgery. Dr. Porter surrounds himself with a highly efficient, engaged, proactive, and caring staff. By skill and reputation he is in tremendous demand. I couldn’t offer a greater recommendation.

Dr Porter performed robotic surgery to remove my prostate Feb 2013. I could not be happier with my outcome and my decision to have Dr Porter do the surgery. One week after surgery my catheter was removed and I never dampened a single pad. The incisions were small and I had very little pain. 3 months after surgery I felt 100% healed and went on a multi-day backcountry ski trip. Dr Porter is extremely skilled at what he does and his outcomes prove it. Ask around. I know other men who went to other surgeons and even had a lower gleason score than I did. Their recovery experiences have not been as positive as mine. Attend a prostate cancer support group and ask about surgeons. It really does matter who you choose.
