Ratings for Dr. James R. Porter
4.8
Some physicians especially those who perform complicated surgical procedures try diligently to satisfy the wishes of their patients all while considering the risks involved. Dr. Porter understands his patients lifestyles and works to maintain these lifestyles by removing only what he sees necessary. Less experienced surgeons want the pathology report to show negative on all surrounding tissue i.e. nerve bundles and lymph nodes. Dr. Porter makes these decisions during surgery. He has seen thousands of pathology reports and understands what marginal tissue feels like during surgery. Then he weighs his patients wishes and makes a decision having clearly discussed the risk with his patient in doing so. I understood the risk. Because of Dr. Porter's vast experience in performing these robotic assisted surgeries and his brilliance in retaining all of the myriad outcomes of his work he is able to achieve a result that fits the "wants" of his patients like me while minimizing risk. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to go with Dr. Porter. I had no incontinence from the time the catheter was removed and have full sexual function. I pee like I was 19 again! Congratulations to Dr. Porter and his team on an amazing career and I thank him for having me as a patient. People need to understand that this is very subjective work and the world is fortunate to have specialists like Dr. Porter.
I hold Dr. Porter in the highest esteem. He is exceptional at his job and my father and I greatly appreciated his direct and candid communication style. My father went in for surgery, the surgery was high risk due to the actions of our oncologist in Olympia. Dr Porter took on the case even though it was highly complex. He kept us informed on what was going on at all times. I got a call from him immediately after surgery updating the status of my father. As a retired Firefighter EMT, I greatly appreciate Dr. Porters' direct communication style and how candid he was with my father and me. I understand that medicine is a science, science is not 100% and we are all human and things can go wrong. Not this time, I feel Dr. Porter took on a high-risk case and gave my father several more years. Thank you, Dr. Porter.
Dr. Porter gets my highest recommendation -- I am forever thankful to him and his staff for the excellent care that I have received and most importantly the great results. As a candidate for radical prostatectomy I was looking for a surgeon with deep experience through a high number of operations, that was on top of the data and latest medical advances, and had a strong support team -- I found that that surgeon in Dr Porter, who was also extremely empathetic having gone through the surgery himself. 57 YO and healthy at the time of the surgery, with gleason 3+3 with no cancer at the margins. My nerve bundles were spared and recovery and return to normal function was very quick. 18 months post surgery now, I am cancer free with my follow-up uPSA tests at undetectable (zero) levels. At present my diagnosis and surgery are things that rarely cross my mind, but when I do think about the last few years I am very glad that I chose the surgical option and grateful that I picked Dr Porter as my surgeon. You can't do better than Dr Porter and I recommend him with out reservation.
I was referred to Dr. Porter by my urologist because I had prostate cancer. After much consideration, I opted to have a prostatectomy. Prior to surgery, I met with him and his team. He explained what would occur during surgery and answered my questions. When I was admitted for surgery, I met all members of his team, who made me comfortable and reassured me I was in good hands. The operation lasted four hours, and he was able to spare my nerves. I experienced no pain post surgery, and went home the next day. I followed the instructions provided to me by his team. Though I had been told I would experience incontinence for 6-9 months, I only had it for three weeks. After a month, I was pad-free. After 6 weeks, I was able to resume all normal activities. My recovery has been amazing. All of my bodily functions are as they were pre-surgery, including the ability to get an erection naturally! I have nothing but the highest praise and admiration for Dr. Porter and his team. With his international reputation and vast experience, I would not hesitate to recommend him.
The most unresponsive, least helpful, doctor’s staff I have ever encountered. They have telephone hold queues that keep you waiting for hours , beyond the office closing time. They decline to see patients referred by other doctors if they deem the expected treatment to be other than their boss’s preferred specialty. So much for the Hippocratic oath. They don’t return messages for days (actually still waiting) and they forward calls to people you later learn have already gone to lunch. And when they decline a referral they don’t bother to tell the referring doctor, let alone explain it. Also, they don’t in a timely manner provide the name of a doctor they believe a more suitable option.Knowledge rating? Only selected patients will ever know.
Age 73. Had radical prostatectomy after 20 years of watchful waiting (many PSA tests and multiple biopsies). During this period I did extensive research into options and providers. I selected Dr. Porter based on my specific history, the number of operations he had performed, and reviews of other docs and patients. My recovery has been rapid (living with a catheter for a week wasn't fun but necessary) with no incontinence at all and recovery of sexual function within a month. My selection of Dr. Porter after 20 years of research and deliberation was borne out by my personal results. If radical prostatectomy is a procedure you select for yourself, Dr. Porter is an excellent choice.
A week ago, I had a Da Vinci robotic surgery with Dr. Porter, and less than a week later, I walked around Green Lake daily for about 4-5 miles very much at ease - no continence, no pain, AND no discomfort. I had my wife with me at the consultation phase with Dr. Porter, he made us all feel very confident and settled. We were very comfortable and thankful for utmost care, advisory, EMPATHY, and through the pre-surgery, surgery, and post-surgery care. Dr. Porter and surgical team, and to call out Dr. Miriam Stone (Anesthesiologists ), Dr. Samarpit Rai (Urologist) at the surgery was warm, caring exemplary. We were very fortunate to be under his care. We also want to share the same sentiments and gratitude to the Swedish Medical staff and nurses for the very cared & pleasant stay overnight. Thank you, Dr.Porter and the team.
Lost trust in him. Read the biopsy report incorrectly and set me up for a highly invasive procedure which was unnecessary. Good thing I went for 2nd and 3rd opinion from docs at world renowned institutions who disagreed with his assessment. Be extremely careful using his service.
I had recent prostate surgery by Dr. Porter. As one of Jehovah's witnesses, I have a strong and uncompromising belief about the Bible's direction regarding the use of blood, and will not accept a blood transfusion. When I met with Dr. Porter in his office, I communicated my wishes to him, and he set my mind at ease when he stated that he would gladly abide by my wishes. When I met with him just prior to going in for surgery he once again communicated to me that no blood would used in my surgical procedure. He stated that he expected blood loss would be minimal due to the type of procedure he would perform. He made sure that all of the necessary paperwork and forms were in place before proceeding. He explained exactly what he was going to do, and what I could expect during my recovery. He was spot on. I can only say what a relief it is to find a Dr. who was willing to respect my beliefs and work with me on this matter. I had heard positive things about him as a surgeon and from my experience, I would say that he is one of, if not THE best in the field. Thank you very much Dr. Porter. I must also add that I had excellent care at Swedish hospital. A big thank you to all of the nurses and their staff on the 11th floor at Swedish.
Dr. Porter was recommended to me by one of my coworkers that had the same procedure done a couple years prior to my diagnosis. My experience with Dr. Porter and his team is almost unbelievable. Two days after my cathador was removed I experienced my first post prostectemy erection. My incontinence was minimal, one month after procedure I no longer use any pads. My first PSA test after the prostectemy came back undetectable. Very pleased with the whole experience. I would recommend Dr. Porter and his team to anyone that has prostrate problems.
