Hoag is wayyyy overrated. I have been there a couple of times and all I can say is that it has a nice ocean view. If you have something complicated or want the best surgeons, you are better off going to UC Irvine hospital.

5 years ago I would have give Hoag 5 starts, but it has steadily declined in overall quality to nearly a 3 even though they are financially consistently in the black. Hospital facilities inside and out are impressive. The quality of nursing care has gone down which used to be excellent. This seems to coincide with "affiliation" (merger) with St. Josephs under the new Covenant Health Network. They are also reducing the types of procedures due to "cost" and Catholic desire rather than need. In fact the only religious service is Catholic mass. As a Presbyterian, I'd prefer they take the "Presbyterian" part of the name off. They focus on high end Heart/Cancer/Neuroscience/Orthopedics/Cancer. In fact even their Womens Health initiatives focus on Breast Cancer & Obstetrics. If you don't have Breast Cancer and aren't having a baby, there's not much left for you. No classes for teens and young women about menstruation, birth control, safe sex, STD's etc. In addition, for menopausal women, they have a class, but no dates. Yes, there are other places to get this information, but Hoag has always been more than a hospital, but part of the community. It no longer feels that way inside or out.

Lack of good nurses, spread to thin. The quality care has gone down hill. I have stayed at Hoag many times and have noticed the drop in quality and professional care. If you happen to be a financial contributor, then you get excellent care.

Ive had many stays at this hospital; cancer related & childbirth. The facilities and staff are superior.

Change from community hospital to regional (factory style) hospital has reduced the overall quality of care. Rotation of nurses from floor to floor adds pressures to the reduced nurse to patient levels. Many of the more experienced nurses have left the Newport Beach facility.

Don't trust any of the cardiologists at hoag, they lied to me for over 10 years. I had a bad left lead wire for my pacemaker and each and every one of them lied and said it was fine. Went to outside doctor who looked at records and was shocked. When in hospital sewer system backed up and I had to walk myself out of room to stand in hallway. BEWARE!
