10/07/13 5 5 5 5 I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and had a radical prostatectomy. I was quite anxious with the diagnosis but once meeting with Dr. Metcalfe I felt reassured that everything would be alright. Dr. Metcalfe took excellent care of me during and after my hospital stay. I appreciate not only his surgical skills, but also the kindness and caring both he and his staff have shown me. You have my greatest admiration and appreciation.

26/11/11 5 5 5 5 My husband was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. He is quite young and we were quite shocked with the news. Dr. Metcalfe spent a long time explaining all options to us. He then set up an appointment with the radiotherapist. After another visit we decided on surgery. He performed robotic surgery to remove the prostate. He recovered in all ways very quickly. Through the whole episode I was very grateful for Dr. Metcalfe's care and would recommend him highly.  Respond

02/10/11 5 5 5 5 I had both white cells and red cells in my urine so it was recommended I have a cystoscopy. The morning of the proceedure, I happened to check this website and found many negative comments about Dr Metcalfe. Here is my experience. I was very nervous and was prepared by the nurse for the proceedure. When Dr. Metcalfe entered the room, he came right over, introduced himself and put his hand on my shoulder asking how I was doing. I was still very nervous. The cysto was very unpleasant and when it was over, I was very sore and still am 4 days later. However, the doctor was excellent. He diagnosed me with Interstitial Cystitis. He asked me if I had any questions, showed me the inside of my bladder on the screen and made sure I left with an appropriate treatment plan and pain medication. In my opinion, he was excellent and if you have to have a cysto, please do not be nervous of Dr. Metcalfe.  Respond

08/06/11 3 3 1 3 I am a 26 year old woman recently diagnosed with Intersticial Cystitis. I went to see Dr. Metcalfe because of the extreme agonizing pain I was under. After he did a cystoscopy and diagnosed me I asked him for some pain medication because I had missed work for 2 days, it was hard even walking. His answer: "you don't need any, just go to work, it will take your mind off it" and walked away, not a referral to any resources, just a prescription for a basic treatment... The day after I had to go to the emergency room because I was in so much pain, the Doctor there couldn't believe I wasn't given any pain medication, she was really helpful, even referred me to a website with information about IC. Needless to say, I will never see Dr. Metcalfe again!  Respond

29/07/10 5 5 5 5 Dr. D Metcalfe removed my left kidney on June 14th, it was full of cancer. I found him to be very very nice to my husband and myself about explaining what needed to be done, and he followed through and did a wonderful job. 17/06/10 3 5 5 5 I have been under Dr. Metcalfe's care for the last 6 years after a tumour was discovered in my bladder (30 year old female ~ no symptoms, rare). At our first meeting he seemed abrupt and cold...couldn't believe the diagnosis, but I was scheduled for surgery 2 weeks later. I have had follow up cystoscopies on a regular basis with him, and he has always been kind, personable, and at the end of the procedue he asks if I have any questions, gives my hand a reassuring squeeze, and encourages me. You usually have to give a doctor time to get to know you. After all, I'm not always in my best form when I meet new people.  Respond

13/08/09 5 5 5 5 Saw this doctor on an emergency consult for prostate cancer. He was very straight forward, did a great surgery, explained things well. When the biopsy results were in he phoned with them immediately and recommended further treatment. Very proficient surgeon.  Respond

04/08/09 1 5 1 1 i don't think this doctor believed my story, i think he made a judgemnet call about me that a moral and ethical doctor would not make, he sent me away telling me that my pain was imagined, he did not help me at all.

20/07/09 1 4 1 1 I found this doctor useless, he was obviously not knowledgeable. Treated me like scum during my lithotripsy. After telling me to put up my hand if it hurt I waited until it was intense the second time and his words were "get a grip" I hope to God one day he gets a huge nasty sharp stone that drags out for weeks then he can "get a grip" This kind of doctor is shouldn't be practicing in this field is he lacks knowledge.  Respond

01/06/09 1 3 1 3 We picked this Urologist because he operated on our friend;when there are complications from a prostate biopsy, this doctor takes no responsibility;we could not find him when we really needed him,his receptionist is the same as he is, rude and blows you off,we are going to get another opinion as his behaviour/attitude has disappointed us and we now have lost our confidence in him.If he does the surgery and there are complications we will be on our own again. we believe he is semi-retired and perhaps he should just retire  Respond

18/03/08 5 4 5 5 I was sent to see him by my GP after an on-call Urologist I saw during a stone passage told me that lithotripsy would not help with my particular stones.I subsequently have had 3 successful litho's, however ended up having emergency surgery anyway, but I am not surprised due to the number of stones that he was able to rid me of.Quite frankly I appreciated his "bedside manner" when he had to do an emergency surgery on me,which went well.I find him quite easy to chat with and friendly with alot of knowledge. We seem to forget that Dr's are human beings and sometimes they have a grumpy day,we seem to take things to personally.I feel lucky to have received him as my urologist and feel confident in his abilities or I would have asked for another specialist.  Respond

27/12/07 5 4 5 5 After spending 9 months with another Doctor trying to get my prostate cancer looked after was very concerning .I met with Dr. Metcalfe and with in 20 days was scheduled for surgery . Once surgery was completed I had many problems not with the surgery or infections but blockages and scaring after surgery these were looked after very quickly by Dr Metcalfe both over the phone and visit to his clinic . Very excellent bed side manner more than helpful with any problem that I have encountered. I would recommend him anytime It has been 5 months since my operation and can still discuss issues that come up and get quick responces from Dr Metcalfe Just a wonderful doctor  Respond

09/11/07 4 2 1 4 Despite the acute shortage of doctors, this guy needs to retire. He missed 4 very large kidney stones in my wife (even after performing a scope), and has no bedside manner whatsoever. Even the post operative staff commented on his poor demeanor. Give it up Dr. Metcalfe, Calgary will survive without you!  Respond

24/07/07 3 1 1 3 After being admitted to the hospital after a kidney stone attack, Dr. Metcalfe took on my case. He was abrupt, not much of a personality, but that really did not bother me. So long as he knew what he was doing. However he dropped the ball there. When a resident approached Dr. Metcalfe with some of my test results that would explain why I felt so ill, he lost his temper. He said he did not want to hear it right now, and never wants to handle another female patient again. All of this was said in front of the nurses desk. Having a bad day fine, I get it! But when you mess up this badly do not blame the patient. RETIRE!!!

16/07/07 5 3 1 3 Very poor bedside manner. Says almost nothing, seems to have little interest other than merely technical, in too big a hurry. (Maybe that is the system's fault.)  Respond
