19/08/13 2 1 4 4 We've been with Dr Pereira for 7 or so years but have noticed a steady decline in his service. The wait times are typically an hour and when you do finally get him he's rushed. In 7 years he's never even once suggested I should have a physical and when I asked him for a prostate test at 40, he sent me away for a blood count. I think he's more interested in filling his apt book that he is helping people. I think his new sign stating 'we cannot estimate how long your wait will be' sums it up nicely.  Respond

26/11/12 5 4 5 5 We have been seeing Dr. Pereira since he first arrived in Nanaimo. Our family is so grateful to have had his expertise and guidance. We have recently lost our father and Dr. P. gave us all the time we needed as a family and as individuals to get through the time up to Opa's death and after. He has gotten to know us as a family and takes the time to understand the dynamics and special needs of us as siblings and with families of our own. He also really appreciates when we do our own research and share what we have learned, he is always interested. Dr. P. also has a special place in his heart for teenagers as he always asks about my son and when he is with him gives his full attention and support. We have never felt anything but care and respect and good judgement from this dear man. Dr. Pereira is always there for us and we would recommend him to all ages for excellent care.

08/05/12 5 3 4 4 Dr Pereira has been my Doctor for eight years. I find him very helpful and willing to listen. He doesn't dismiss your feelings and the research you've done. A good doctor! Like all doctors, though, he could keep more up to date with studies and new findings, but I find him very helpful and if he doesn't find the problem, he will recommend you to a specialist.  Respond

12/03/12 5 3 5 5 I moved to Nanaimo just over 6 months ago and Dr. P was accepting new patients. I have never had a problem getting in to see him. His receptionist Elaine is excellent, always kind, helpful and accommodating with appointments or if I need to cancel. Dr. P himself is a very kind, helpful person. He listens to my concerns and addresses them accordingly. Sometimes he runs late, which is understandable and they are backlogged. But he always sends me for tests and refers to me other dr's and never overlooks any details. Took time out during my son's first visit to ensure any of my concerns or questions as a new parent were answered. Overall am happy being in is care and would recommend him to others looking for a good long term family practitioner.  Respond

30/10/11 5 4 5 5 Dr Pereira has been our doctor since he moved to Nanaimo about 6 or 7 years ago, and being a nurse, I was very impressed with how he had treated his patients in the hospital and now am very happy with the care he has given to me and my family. He is attentive and thorough and if he feels he is unsure of a diagnosis he sends you to a specialist in that area of expertise. He is very knowledgeable and thorough. He is very approachable on any subject. He orders tests when they are required and yet does not order them if he feels they are a waste of time. His office staff are very friendly and efficient. I see him regularly due to recent medical concerns and he is always respectful and caring. We are very fortunate to have him here in Nanaimo!!!  Respond

09/04/10 5 2 5 5 Dr. Pereira is the doctor of my 2 sons. We have had to wait to see him but I have no problem doing so as I know he is giving each patient the time they require. He is kind, attentive and very thorough. I believe he only prescribes medication when truly required. Friends who also have him as a doctor have said that he has found solutions to their various issues where others have missed. I am incredibly grateful for his role in my family.  Respond

16/04/08 5 5 5 5 This is the best doctor my family has ever seen. He saved my newborn baby (when the hospital kept sending us home), I am forever thankful for what he did and how he did the tests and got my baby into the hosptial before it was too late. My baby was sick many times after his hospital stay, and Dr Pereira would come in before his office opened to see my baby so he wouldn't catch anything from the other people in the waiting room. I don't know many doctors that would do that. He has been always so great and careful with my children. Thanks for going the extra mile for our family!  Respond

20/11/07 2 1 2 3 I've been to see him many times. some times are tolerable, others are horrible. excrutiatingly long waits, but what bothers me most is uncaring attitude towards a remedy. If and only if you get the 15 minutes you're alloted its so rushed and for the most part I feel like I'm just wasting my time. My last trip to see him blew me away. I had a few issues I needed diagnosing, but before I was even done the first problem he was trying to leave! I litterally had to rush through everything I had to say as he stood by the door. I am aware of their challenges and service people but they overbook each and every day. I felt disgusted with his level of attention and care he gave on my last visit. I honestly feel cheated when I pay $50 a month for health care. After experiencing our health care system the last few years, its easy to see most Dr.'s stressed and clealy taking on too many patients. Thankfully they'll awlays prescribe medication...if there were only more doctors who truly cared!!  Respond

07/09/07 3 1 3 2 Very dissapionted about the care received. Have chronic back pain, was perscribed a pain killer (narcotic). I was never taken seriously about the level of pain. Feel I was doubted. Never examined in 2 years. Had to push to get tests done. After 3 years, I received a letter stating he no longer wanted to be my doctor, with no explanation. Does anyone know how hard it is to find a doctor, when you are taking a narcotic for pain? Most will not perscibe them. I was very dissapointed in the level of care, as I am not the only one that this has happened to. You pour your heart out to your doctor, and he walks away without a word. HOW IS THAT BEING A GOOD DOCTOR?  Respond

28/08/07 5 3 5 5 Dr. Pereira is undoubtedly the best doctor I have ever had and I have had several in different cities throughout BC. He is kind, caring, listens and acts promptly to treat you or refer you to the specialist that you need. He is not a pill pusher but will prescribe what you need and get you off the meds as soon as possible. Because he gives each patient as much time as they need, he often runs late - an indication of a thorough doctor in my opinion - he does not rush patients through their appointment to meet an arbitrary schedule. I feel extremely fortunate to have him as my doctor.  Respond

10/07/07 4 4 5 5 My sone and both have a chronic illness and need to see the doctor regularly. Dr Pererira has seen us on very little notice and stayed over an hour after his office closed to be able to give my son and I thorough care. He is always, kind, polite and genuinely warm and caring. I also have a healthcare background and have met many doctors. Dr Pereria is the most thorough doctor I have ever been to and has the best bedside manner of all of them.  Respond

29/06/07 4 3 5 5 He is amazing! I also have never minded the wait as he is kind, caring, and always has concern for the person that is with him. He always asks about my children whether they are there or not and takes the time to make sure you are emotionally okay as well well as physically when you leave. He gives Dr.'s a great name! I am obviously very lucky he was able to take myself and my children on.  Respond

27/05/07 3 5 5 If Pereira's waiting room time seems extended, it's because this professional leave no gall stone unturned to provide attention, diagnosis and treatment. In these days of hurry-up care, most of us must accept that we MUST provide time to stay healthy!  Respond

31/03/07 5 5 5 Dr. M. Pereira is an excellent doctor in all aspects. Professional, Knowledgeable, patient, compassionate, thorough & very understanding. Knowing when a patient's case is in need of appropriate referrals outside of his general practice. This Doctor operates his practice on all compasses with true care that is hard to find now a days. I cannot praise his professional service enough. Unforeseen circumstances left me with no alternative but to relocate from community in which he continues to practice. Encouraged me to come back as his patient if I were ever in this area again. I would do so in the blink of an eye. Dr. M. Pereira, if you have the opportunity to read this...(perhaps I am unbeknown to you at this time)I would again like to thank you kindly for your professional care. :)  Respond

21/02/07 3 5 5 Dr. Pereira has several wonderful skills. One is he works WITH the patient. He is not judgemental. He does not tell you what to do or what not do. Another wonderful skill he has is communication. He does make suggestions - it is up to me whether I follow the suggestion or not. He does communicate the pros & cons of his suggestion. I feel my concerns regarding my health are heard as he always takes the time to listen. I feel confident in the fact my disease is well managed now and under control. A referral to a specialist was done when he wanted another opinion. Keep up the wonderful job Dr. Pereira.  Respond

18/02/07 5 5 5 Very nice and thorough. Caring. The negative comments below highlight what a bunch of ungrateful wretches patients from Nanaimo are. Why anybody such as Dr. Pereira would want to work in this town full of whackos I do not know, but I personally am very glad he has chosen to work here in Nanaimo. People in this place have no idea how lucky they are to have such good doctors.  Respond

04/02/07 5 5 5 When we moved to Nanaimo we were extremely fortunate to have found Dr. Pereira by word of mouth through friends. 18/01/07 3 4 4 We moved to Nanaimo a few years ago and started seeing Dr Pereira when I first got pregnant. He was always very happy to see me and ask how I was doing. He always remembers our name and our sons name. He is very patient and gentle, and not your typical dr. I recommend him to everyone because he's very personable and will always suggest options. I suffer from depression and he suggested other options before prescribing me medication and when I came to him and told him that I was experiencing bad side effects, he was very understanding and supportive to help me to come off of them and gave me the option to try other things. He is by far the best doctor I've had.  Respond

15/01/07 2 5 5 I really like the way he DOESN'T rush to prescribe medicines we don't need - some doctors just automatically reach for the prescription pad, but he takes a much more pragmatic approach, preferring to investigate the whole problem. He also doesn't hesitate to refer to a specialist if needed. He has a very friendly, gentle and respectful manner.  Respond

05/12/06 1 1 1 It is my belief that Dr. Pereira is unethical, rude, mean & arrogant. I commented to the Dr's receptionist that I was unhappy with his treatment of me. She told me to find a new Dr. I then received a letter from Dr. Pereira telling me to find a new Dr. for treatment. I was extremely clinically depressed and suicidal at the time. It is my opinion that Dr. Pereira broke his hippocratic oath and should have his license revoked. I believe he is not ethical.  See Responses

27/11/06 4 5 5 He never seems in a hurry or a rush. At the conclusion of appointments, he always asks if there is anything else of concern. He will actually draw out more information from me if he feels I'm not forthcoming.  Respond
