My doctor works only at U. She's the best.
U of A hospital is the best too. Complex surgery, major emergencies belong at the U. Dog bites, banged toes...go to any doctor. We've been referred to Emergency and haven't waited for more than a few minutes. If its a real emergency, you'll be seen and cared for rapidly. If not you wait. If you're waiting...rethink where you should be!

My husband and I have been patients in here. Some units are def. better than others. Surgery units are great, medical units not so much. It seens that the nurses are more available and more pleasant than in the past. Hope so!

Terrible place. My disabled granddaughter went in to have a foot operation and they put a cast over open blisters. After a week it was so infected she is in there again and they were talking about amputating the foot. They give her morphine when they have to scrape the infected area. Any fool knows you can't cover an open sore and expect it to heal! My father has also been in there for 3 months with dementia and the care he receives is atrocious! Over drugged and just laying in bed waiting to die. I would never ever recommend this hole to anyone! Has to give it one star but not even worth that!

As far as the skill level of applicable surgeons, physicians, I myself would rate as straight fives. I recently had a severe skydiving accident and have now completed my second surgery. I am extremely disappointed in the ability to comfort as well as the intelligence level of employed Care Aides. At this point in my life I am middle aged and undergoing a very painful emotional experience. This has been very hard for me and I have attended every large rehabilitation hospital in this vicinity. My critique is fare and comparing to other facilities that I have attended. U OF A has been by far, the very worst at which I have stayed. There seems to be an extreme amount of confusion in any doctors applicable suggestions. I was recently told that I was not to have lunch with a friend of mine who made a very special trip in which to come and visit me. Care aides seemed to have gotten the idea that I was not eligible to eat as I was waiting for surgery. This was somebody else who was waiting for surgery as mine had already been completed, just this morning. This friend of mine took the week off of work to come and see me. This visit has now oddly been cut down. This is very concerning and not of the comforting nature that I would expect.

Had triple lumbar fusion done in 2013 . Operation was almost 7 hours every thing went ok ecept when got back to third floor palliative care unit .when I got back to unit I was in extreme discomfort cathader was hurting badly tried to tell nurse for four hours she would not listen to me told me to deal with it. I asked her to get me a doctor she told me doctor was on his way for five hours she lied to me . Any I was miserable and cursed a few times so next morning doctor ordered cathader out then head nurse. said she had back surgery and that I could go home and do dishes and vacuum I told I had triple fusion she did not even take one minute to read my chart she was being a btch cause I was pissed off all night. Then they put on a stretcher and cramed me in between two other guys and said that's what you get for your trouble last night .my point nurse's here are horrible they do not care about patients but sure care about texting there buddies while patients are suffering very unprofessional and i considered suing hospital for miss treatment. The nurses here need a reality check they say they are over worked but every time I'm in hospital they are always texting and talking to other staff about personal life's they are overpaid and don't care the only thing they work hard at is being on their iPhone and running there mouth nurses here are very inconsiderate if you are going to be a nurse you should take people skills we rely heavily on nurses being professional if you cannot handle ornery patients then you should consider career change

Dreadful hospital. Emergency is a nightmare. Was ambulsnced in with diagnosed appendicitis. Kept lying on gerney in ambulance bay for over 4 hours. Even though a bed was waiting. Staff who came to me always said they couldn't find me. I was taken to orthopedic unit. Was told that my op may be cancelled ( appendix was ruptured and leaking). Got the op thank goodness. They made me sleep on a stretcher 2 nights after oout was told it was due to the over 5 year old temporary measure as there were not enough beds and I was the healthiest patient in the unit so I got the setcher. Staff overworked and burned out. Here is the outrageous fact, the unit next to mine was empty no beds, no staff. Oh and also there was an old lady in my unit no longer surgical but there were no long care facilities available so she had to stay in $2000 a day hospital bed until a long term care bed could be found elsewhere. S A terrifying experience. Shame on government for not planning our healthcare better!

ratings on basis of both observation of others in emergency and myself in emergency. the most desperately disappointing experience is with patient concerns. they have not yet received my complaint though i contacted them about isssues at least 4 times. oh well. there should be a provincial advocacy body but it musn't do watt these guys didn't or did depending on your relationships to lawyers.

I have been in and out of the U of A Hospital since I was 7 years old. (Now 25) I have had excellent Dr.s and amazing nurses! Only thing I would suggest, going to any Dr, have your questions ready and written down. They are busy, many people that need care, I think some people forget that patients come from all over Alberta not just locals. The food for patients isn't the greatest tasting and on occasion comes to you not so hot, but what you get is usually nutritional and they have many patients on many floors and sections to get food to at the same time. I have been in the hospital for two major surgeries, one small one and one biopsy, may be back for another minor surgery soon. I've seen neck and spine specialists, in which I had a 50% chance of being paralyzed from two major surgeries both of which I came out of fine and recovered quickly. My scars are minimal, and I owe some of those amazing Dr.s my life, as well as some if my family members. My sister had 10% chance of surviving blood poisoning and they saved her also. One of the nurses was caring enough to sponge bathe her and shave her legs while my sister was in a coma for a week and a half. My uncle had kidney surgery done there before I can remember, he hasn't needed a replacement yet, been about twenty years. They need more recognition then they receive. This is only a small portion of one family's dealings with this hospital and the staff, imagine how many lives have been saved and/or changed for the better! I have been in a few other hospitals in Edmonton and I wouldn't want to be cared for anywhere else but the U of A!

I am 89, and I have been in many hospitals in Canada US Germany. I was last in the UAH in 2001 for knee replacement surgery. My treatment excellent -- some of the finest nursing I have ever had. And now I am going in again this time for open heart surgery. I have high confidence that I will come out whole and well.

My father was admitted to the ER and spent over 12 hours there. Never saw the same nurse/student twice. Indifferant to his suffering, and finally put him into a room. He had complications from Chemo, and was a DNR/no extreme measures. They left him in the care of a MEDICAL STUDENT. Overall a disgraceful lack of care/compassion. There is not nearly enough space to list all of the negatives. SHAME ON YOU ALL
