I have multiple chronic diseases which causes me to be admitted 2-3 times a year. I have had great care & some really bad care in this ER & on the floor I was admitted to. I truly believe it’s the attitude of the ER physician & nurse. Example 1: I have been told before in the ER I was there just for pain meds but I was then admitted for 3 days for my diverticulitis which is very painful. I did file a complaint on this ER doc because all he had to do is look at my past history (all my docs & procedures are done at Riverside so I don’t have this problem). Example 2: I had another horrible visit when I was admitted for pneumonia. I am diabetic & staff knew. They gave me a high dose of steroids & would only check my sugar w meals. I told them repeatedly it needed to be checked every 2-3 hours to keep in control. I was told that is not the way we do it. So at the next meal, they checked my sugar & it was over 400. They caused me an extra 2 days in hospital to get my sugar under control. Example 3: I was admitted again for pneumonia & my specialist came in & ordered antibiotics. I had a room mate & she heard the doctors orders. I was told by the nurse, he didn’t order anything & I was to be discharged. I asked her to call my specialist & nurse told me, he had left & cant get a hold of him. I got in my cell phone & called the emergency line for my specialist. The specialist called me back within 2 minutes. I told him what was going on & walked to nurses station & handed phone to nurse & said my specialist is in the phone & wants to talk to u. Needless to say this nurse & floor doc got a tongue lashing from this specialist. I asked for a different nurse as after this she had an attitude w me afterwards. I also filed a complaint on the nurse & floor doctor with administration. Administration came down the next day to talk to me & got my my roommate statement who heard the orders. I am not sure what happened to them but I hope they were disciplined. The best care I received is when I have had surgeries there. I had my son there 20 years ago & it was a emergency situation & care was awesome. I have had several gastro surgeries here & great care. It seems when u get admitted through ER, the care is horrible but after surgical situation is great. I imagine it’s because the surgeon is treating u instead of floor doctors. I have noticed a huge decline in care since COPC have taken over as floor doctors. They don’t listen to your past history & only want to treat your current situation fast to get u discharged. They have no interest in finding out reason why illness occurred & if related to other health issues. I try to get my specialist to do a direct admit before going to ER if I can so I know I won’t be stuck w COPC floor doc.
I had a TLKR. The before, during and after care was excellent. Admissions was very easy and prompt. The food was great. They treated you like family. Thank you so much Riverside for providing a caring and loving environment while maintaining a professional quality of care.
My husband received horrendous care by the emergency department as well as by the security personnel. He came in with an altered mental status related to having a hypoglycemic reaction. He was calm , confused and fairly cooperative (meaning he was not agitated or combative he just didn't want to be touched) when he was brought in by the EMS team and throughout the initial assessment and testing done in the emergency department. However, once he sat up and wanted to stand to take of his basic personal needs that he could not do lying or sitting on the gurney, the RN and physician would not allow him to do that even when I informed that in past occurrences he would lie back down once he was done attending to his needs. The physician immediately called for security and to have him sedated. No one tried to talk to him calmly or gently assist him back on the gurney. The RN staff and security team immediately pushed him forcefully back onto gurney and 4 security personnel were aggressively hold him down at his arms and legs. One security person even had one hand in a submissive lock. Instinctively my husband tried to pull his arms and legs away from them to which they said he was becoming more agitated and combative. So they put him in 4 point leather restraints with key locks and left him there. Not only did they not listen to a family member that knows his condition and responses to a hypoglycemic reaction well, they escalated a situation that could have been completely avoided and created a much worse scenario and outcome. They didn't even come back to check on him until he was transferred to the ICU. They also would not even bring in a fan while he was sweating profusely (which made him more uncomfortable and agitated) stating it would be in the way if they needed to come in and address his agitation again. REALLY!!! Once he was transferred to the ICU, he was so agitated by the emergency staff and security personnel that the ICU physician said he had no choice to increase his sedation to a level II and possibly a level III which would require intubation to protect his airway. I have been in healthcare as a clinician for over 15 years and I have never seen an emergency department handle a situation so grievously and aggressively to the point of escalating my husband's medical situation and endangering him without concern except that they did not want to have to keep coming in to deal with a confused patient. I would not ever recommend this hospital to anyone and will never have my husband transported by EMS to this facility again despite any snow emergency level. I would take him to another hospital first no matter the consequences.
this hospitl does not give the care that they claim to they let my someone i know lay in kidney failure for 3 days only to take him to icu after going into cardiac arrest and then tell the family the only reason he was in icu was that he had to many visitors and needed some extra rest.the family complained to the chief of staff mcbride only to be told to have a nice holiday weekend he was going out of town with his family. they gave this man meds that he had a known allergy to it but still continued giving it to him even when he refused I use to think riverside was a great hospital until this incident and few others that I have known about from other friends and family. Go to Mt Carmel hospitals you may get better health care.
