I have Multiple Sclerosis and one afternoon I came down w/a fever and suddenly I could not walk, even w/a walker. I would continually fall and could not get up. I call 911, the ambulance took me to Hudson Valley. I was in ER from 7 PM and transfered to private room (yeah) at 5 AM the next morning. I was hooked up to IV. I asked to use bathroom and nurse brought in bed pan. I asked why they could not take me 3 steps to bathroom bringing the IV equipment with them. they said to wait till the house specialist came in to ask questions. I am 79, I live alone, have all my faculties, my two children live in CA. the hospitalist specialist wandered in at 2 PM, said I had a UTI infection, I was on IV antibiotic and fluids. I said I had no UTI symptoms at home. He sent in an infections disease specialist and a neurologist. the neurologist immediately said the MS relapse medicine (thru IV) made the antibiotic ineffective so the dr. removed the MS med. by this time I did not have a fever and I could move my legs/feet without pain. I was still kept on bedrest. The following day when I could not get any answers from the hositalist specialist, I signed myself out. OH NO they exclaimed, OH Yes I replied. they prepared the papers. I got in touch with my neurologist treating my MS for the past 15 years who said to stay one more night, sign myself out next morning and go back to Hudson Valley Infustion Suite for last antibiotic infusion which I did. the best thing about signing yourself out is you get to see all the tests run on me. I saw "blood infection-Sepsis" and I freaked. My MS doc said the infusion of antibiotic was best tx option for me. they called in a script for oral antibiotic. I asked the infectious disease doc if I should have my urine checked when finished the meds. He said "not necessary". I double checked w/primary care doc, went for urine culture and guess what, infection still there! so I'm back on stronger antibiotic. so much for good advise from doc. assigned. don't they realize how dangerouse UTI's are in older women? Oh, also tests should my kidneys swollen w/trickles of blood. Fortunately because I still have my senses, I am relying on my regular GP, and now a recommended urologist to determine if any permanent damage to kidneys. Next time I will insist on going to Northern Westchester Hospital. It must be better than Hudson Valley. the ambulance men said they are required to take to nearest hospital however I learned I can insist on Northern Westchester and pay the higher fee. The nurse on duty was discouraged by my actions but in the end understood my rationale. The nurses on 2nd floor are MORE than helpful.
My husband was admitted last night taken from his rehab to the hosp with chest pains. A cardiologist Dr Tarkin came in early am before i got there. When I got there i requested the dr to come in again the clerk said she would reach him. she comes back 20 mins later said he is back on the floor will be in soon. 2 hrs went by a kidney dr came in because my husband is a dialysis pt said he would get dialysis today I said I want to speak to the cardiologist 1st because he is still having chest pains and left arm is very swollen with his finger tingling .. The kidney dr also said after dialysis he will be discharged. I said how can you discharge a pt and no one addressed the chest pains he said something under his breath and walked out.. I req the cardilogist again and a nasty hosp dr came in Dr Denny Thomas Muskardin in said dr turken left the building .. I said no one could call my husbands cardiologist in danbury. she said he is here and we can handle the issue.. So i called and the NP from my husband cardiologist ofc called me back & said if i could get him to danbury er she will tell the dr's he is there, Never would i go to hudson valley hosp again .. The e/r nurse was also nasty when i called to check on my husband. as we were getting ready to leave Dr tarken came and said can i speak to you guys .. I said i requested that 2 hrs ago we are leaving now ..
Been to ER recently when I cut my hand. Since I need my hands for work, I asked for a hand specialist. They gave me referral to follow up instead, Meanwhile, the hand surgeon was in the hospital the whole time. He told me himself at my followup. Now, I have to have exploratory surgery when my injury could have been diagnosed that evening. One nurse came in to give me a tetanus shot, and I told them I didn't want one. Then I was asked if I wanted to die from tetanus. Then he proceeded to mock me around the corner where I could hear them. The nurse who did the stitches was professional and courteous. The wait time was short.
