Failed to protect a patient who was unable to stop a procedure himself, that resulted in his death.

I brought my husband to the ER on the morning of March 3, 2015. The staff decided within a few hours to admit him, the doctors seemed to be genuinely concerned. But once they made the decision to keep him, it all fell apart. They left him in the "awaiting testing" area for 6 hours before they could find him a bed. Then they left him in the "observation area" (1J1) for 3 days, because they couldn't find a room. While there, the nurses kept trying to check his blood sugar and give him insulin even though he isn't diabetic and there were no indications that he needed it...but a doctor put it in there, so instead of calling the doctor, they just kept trying to inject him! My husband wasn't responding to the antibiotics, and no doctor had come to see him for over 24 hours, so we asked for the patient representative. We were told by RN James, that the patient representative is too busy to talk to every patient who is upset about their care. When the doctor finally came, we asked why they hadn't checked for MRSA, so she put in a consult for infectious disease, who did a culture for MRSA and added a second antibiotic. 36 hours after coming to the hospital, he was quarantined in the observation area, without a bathroom, sink, or shower because he did have MRSA. Do you know how many people had touched him in his first day and a half at TGH before he was quarantined and how many other patients could've been exposed? How do you stay clean if you can't shower or even wash your hands? They didn't even change his sheets for 48 hours! Overall, we have had to fight to get him seen, diagnosed, and treated. Then I had to take my son to the ER because he was feeling dizzy and had a neck ache that concerned me during a weekend. The doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with him so they wanted to do a lumbar puncture. I turned it down. Come Monday morning I took him to our family doctor. He was diagnosed with an acute ear infection! They wanted to tap into his spine for an ear infection!!! Stay away from this place at all costs!

Check-in procedure to see physician Dr. Wilson was tedious and added to the ridiculous wait time.

Dr Peter. Kan Is Excellent!! with me 55yo male, and was Excellent explaining to my 83 yo mother. Who like most mothers, is a true worry type. Dr Peter. Kan Coiled one brain Aneurism an I later had a craniotomy clipping. All of these procedures were explained flawlessly and my care plan . I was ALL ways at ease with Dr Peter Kan. Both Recover Nuro ICU, OR recovery areas were Excellent !

My husband had surgery at TGH and had the good fortune to end up on the Short Stay Unit on 2H. We cannot say enough good things about the care he received there. The unit was very well staffed and his needs were met as promptly as possible. As a teaching hospital, the nurses and staff also consider it their responsibility to inform and educate their patients, which we both appreciated. The nurses were professional, compassionate, and dedicated. The care he received made the 50 mile trip we made to get there worthwhile.

Went in with abdominal pain on a monday about 7pm. Excruciating pain. i waited until 2am for an ER bed.The staff was awesome, controlled my pain very well, did a number of tests to diagnose the problem. Ended up having an appendectomy. TGH is a "teaching hospital' allied with USF school of medicine. That said, I have ZERO complaints about my care there. Wouldnt hesitate to recommend.

ICU was very good ,,,, but Recovery room was VERY Poor and understaffed ..Acted like they couldn't get out fast enough ! Operating room leaves me very suspicious and have a great deal of LACK OF TRUST!..The only saving grace out of this bad outcome was the Hospitalist assigned to me.
