I just wanted to leave a positive review on here since many people seem to care so much about trivial things about how the building looks (it's pretty old it's not going to be amazing) or how cold it is (because I'm sure the front line employees have any access to the heating/air system. please) I went there when pregnant in April 2014 at 12 weeks along because of bleeding. It wasn't very busy but I still got in within probably 20 minutes. blood work right away and had an ultrasound after about an hour of waiting. Not bad at all for emergency department! Ultrasound tech was very nice. Had to wait about another hour for results which of course was nerve-wracking but that's waiting for the ultrasound tech to finish her work, send it off to the radiologist to read it, and then have the doctor come tell me results. Patience is a virtue people! haha Anyway. Turns out baby stopped growing at 6weeks 6 days. Doctor was apologetic and gave me write up of blood work and ultrasound results then left. I was alone as I had told my husband to stay home with our daughter so while I was of course very upset a fantastic nurse came and sat on the bed with me, hugged me and said such comforting things and was so sympathetic. She sat with me for awhile until my husband picked me up and was just generally fantastic. Next day I started bleeding excessively and was almost unconscious on the bathroom floor so my husband called an ambulance. back to welland hospital we go. brought right in and monitored for dropping blood pressure. checked the blood loss, gave me pain meds right away as soon as i mentioned anything, and had a great doctor who even in the very sad situation made us laugh i wish i could remember his name to give him the recognition he deserves. anyway long story but just thought there should be some more positive reviews since not every hospital experience no matter the reason has to be a horrible thing!
The practices of standard precautions and contact precautions are non existent in this hospital. You'll freeze to death before you see a nurse wash his/her hands. Nothing but excuse after excuse from senior staff concerning the thoughtless, mediocre care given by their nurses. A lot of rude nurses that don't seem to enjoy their work are to be found here. Hopefully a new hospital will be built soon and none of the staff here hired, as they all need a permanent vacation, especially the ones working in the Woolcott wing.
I went to Port Colborne Urgent Care for an x-ray as I suspected a broken rib. PCUC called later on and said x-ray was inconclusive, and I should go to Welland for CT; they said they'd fax my chart over, but it was very busy, and I shouldn't go until later. I asked if I could go early next AM and they said yes, imaging is open 24/7. Went to Welland site - neither imaging or registration was open. Registered through emergency, and waited over 4 hours for scheduled CT scan with contrast. While nurse was injecting contrast into IV, IV union 'blew up' as she said, and spewed contrast all over my face and hair, none went into IV. I asked to repeat test and was told it wasn't necessary. Waited three more hours, sitting on edge of bed in open emergency area dressed in open-backed gown, finally another doctor came over, dismissive and perfunctory; said he was scheduling bone scan. When I showed up for that appointment with requisition form, was told form was not signed and scan had not been requisitioned. More tests have been requisitioned since. I am very unhappy with the length of time to get ANY results, with the condescending and dismissive attitude of almost every staff member I have met, and with the general state of the hospital - dirt in corners and along edges of floor, dirty bathrooms, staff not washing hands between handling patients - NOT GOOD.
In Nov 2013 I was transported by ambulance from Port Urgent Care to Welland Hospital diagnosed with a fluttered heart rate and potassium deficiency. I was monitored at Welland Hosp for several hours. In the night I dozed off. Around 3 am I was rudely awakened by a nurse, he shook me and said "hey, go home" and he walked away. I was hooked up to heart monitor, IV etc. I couldn't even get out of bed on my own. Eventually some one showed up and helped me get disconnected. I shrugged it off as an honest mistake. Today I was back at Welland Hospital for a minor procedure. I had to strip and the place was freezing cold in that room. Unable to complete the IV because I was trembling so much of the cold another nurse was called who came in eating food and not washing hands before proceeding with IV. I was not impressed and will not go to that hospital again if I can help it. Staff are rude, unclean and just don't care. The them it is just another job!!
Terrible hospital. Father in law was sent here by his doctor because he had high high heart rate and chest pain. Come to hospital, wait 1.75 hours for triage, wait 2 hours for triage, then wait 3.5 hours and not see a nurse, doctor or anyone. But see plenty of people talking in the hallways. If something happened to my father in law I feel like no one in this hospital would notice!!! Something needs to be done with this hospital!
The emergency room doctor and nurses were great. They made me feel relaxed and that everything will be fine. The nurses and the E.R. doctor took time to talk to me and I did feel rushed. The x-ray personal was amazing. She even called me at home later that day to make sure I was okay. The staff truly care about you. So glad that the hospital is not 30 minutes away or more. My family was there in less than 10 minutes, which helped reduce my anxiety. When it was time to go home the short drive was great. Thank you to the caring, wonderful staff at the Welland Hospital!
