I was on Unit 39 (Children’s Mental Health) for 1 week. I was a complete mess the day I got there; I was constantly crying, barely eaten anything in the week leading up to hospitalization, and was incredibly close to seriously harming myself. The day I left my mental health was worse than the day I was admitted. I have an extensive medical history especially in the physical health area. The entire Unit Staff believed that my mother had Munchausen syndrome by proxy and that I was a hypochondriac. They told us that I was never going to mentally age past 13 (although I already had) because my mom was too controlling. The nurses bullied, belittled, insulted me and almost tore my already fragile family apart. The first night I was there I was having a panic attack and generally breaking down; after screaming my lungs out for about 1-2 hours a nurse entered the “room” I was assigned and told me to basically grow up and stop it because she’s seen 5 year olds come through the door. I have never told anyone this but that night I held the pillow over my head to smother myself. I never did anything wrong and I was never rude or disrespectful to the nurses, they just hated me because I was breathing basically. I was so afraid of being sent back to the unit; I was mentally broken. I honestly don’t know how those nurses still have their jobs or how the unit hasn’t been called out/fixed this issue
I came in with pain in my lower abdomen in the early afternoon. They had me in the operating room by 11pm that night and discharged by noon the next day despite the busyness of emerge. Everyone was kind and took proper time and care to make sure they did not overlook anything. The nurses, anesthesiologist, and surgeon were all very reassuring before my surgery to make me feel comfortable and cared about. Post operative the care was great as well. I wish I could remember all the names to give credit where it is due, but it all happened so fast. One of my postop nurses was Jose and surgeon was Dr. Hardy.
This hospital is undersized and understaffed for the number of people who now live in central Alberta. Surgical wait times are ridiculous for elective surgery. In 2015. I was in need of rotator cuff surgery. I was made to wait one year without the use of my right arm from the referral date to the surgery date. In 2017-2018, It took 21 months to receive a consultation appointment concerning a total left hip replacement. One could then add more months of wait time for a pre-surgical assessement appointment and then a surgical date. During that wait time, I developed a rather nasty limp as a result of severe tendonitis in my right foot. I eventually gave up and had my referral sent to another part of the province (that only took seven months). Recently, I am in my 8th month of waiting for a hernia repair. Every time I phone they keep pushing my surgical date back. Now they are saying late summer, early fall. It would appear my name is moving down the list rather than up the list. I have looked up the Alberta Heath Services website and read the policy section concerning surgical wait times. What the policy states and what is happening in reality for Red Deer are not even close. I eventually was contacted by an individual who was unfamiliar with the policy. After this conversation, I was promised there would be followup contact from Alberta Health Services in an attempt to resolve the problem. This never happened. What is going on at the Red Deer Hospital is a disgrace and should be an embarrassment to Alberta Health Services. I do not blame the staff. Their hands are tied. This is all on the province to have allowed this to happen to the residents of Central Alberta. They should have seen this coming years ago. On the flip side, the new parkade they recently built beside the hospital looks really impressive. I am sure emergency and life threatening surgeries are dealt with quickly and professionally. One can, however, forget about elective surgery. It just doesn't happen. My surgeries were not life threatening. But I think I should count too.
The staff and physicians are amazing given the limitations of their ability to manage a very difficult situation. The craziness in regards to limited beds is unacceptable. We arrived the day before the hospital was on Over Capacity Protocl for 3 days, so thankful we missed this experience in ER. Despite the troubles, the staff and physicians are doing the best for patients.
This hospital is in urgent need of beds and ORs. The over crowding may be why the res's are not getting the guidance they need in dealing with patients, such as: Res's need to know it is okay to laugh and be friendly but it is not okay to laugh at your patient, as this makes the patient hold onto information that should be given and causes a loss of trust and respect in the dr. Also when a patient is asking about tests and information on their health, give it to them. And give it to them straight. If they ask, they really do want to know and have a right to know. Although patients like to be treated with kindness, we do not like the phoney speaking to a child tone because of course we are adults. This hospital utilizes its LPNs but does not clearly identify them or the difference between them and RNs to the patient, this is wrong. An RN has more training and the patient should understand this and know who is who. Pertinent information can and has been missed with the wrong person given the information and ignored it. Each patient should be assigned and have present one RN and one LPN and the LPN should not be acting as an RN but assisting the RN. Surgical wards have nursing stations posted in each hall, this is an excellent way of managing from a patient perspective. Overall this is a good hospital.
