Should I be nervous about becoming addicted to strong pain killers?

I have heard quite a bit about strong painkillers like Percocet, and Vallium being very addictive. People have turned to heroine after starting on these painkillers. I am just wondering how common this is, and if people become reliant or addicted to these prescription drugs often.

Its certainly possible, I wouldn't say its the norm however. I think an important factor in the addiction is the person who has become addicted (naturally) It takes a certain kind of mind to become addicted or dependant on a substance for non medicinal purposes. The jump to heroin signifies abuse, not use.

If you need these pain killers because of injury or surgery I don't think you're at risk. Its when you start to enjoy taking them, or start taking them for fun it becomes an issue.
