I underwent an anterior spinal fusion (L4-L5, L5-S1) and as synesthesia was induced, I was paralyzed by remained full conscious. Neither the anesthesiologist or surgeons noticed my high, irregular pulse which spiked with every incision and subsequent retraction. It was right out of "The Pit and the Pendulum." Absolutely horrific torture to endure. The O.R. team talked about any and everything; not once did the anesthesiologist check my pupils, or notice any alarming trend in my pulse, which was exceedingly high at times.

This laxity of medical discipline and total failure to monitor a patient under their surgical care starts with the hospital administration, and goes right through the ranks to the individual physicians and surgeons whose patients must suffer a lifetime of agony because they were too busy to responsibly care for their helpless, suffering patient.
