My wife just had a surgical procedure at AVH and was under anesthesia for more than 3 hours. It appears that during the procedure her right eye came un-taped from the required closed position and opened during surgery rubbing again the gauze covering, causing what was later found to be a scratched cornea. This condition was extremely painful, more so than the recovery from the original surgical procedure, however, no one from the recovery room nurse to her in room care staff had the authority to address this medical condition. She suffered overnight in extreme discomfort, with the eye becoming infected by the next morning. Finally after calling the hospital social worker and patient advocate, the Anesthesiologist facilitated getting an Ophthalmologist to look at the condition and prescribe a course of treatment.
This all took more than 24 hours post-surgery and could had been easily addressed if the staff took action to address the total patient’s needs rather than just the post-surgical conditions. The nursing staff from surgery, to recovery, to in-room care is not empowered to solve problems and address post-surgical complications and would not step out of their box to provide care without family intervention.
I am very displeased with the level of service provided, the unwillingness to facility necessary medical care and the overall lack of empowerment given the nursing staff. The constant deferral to the admitting physician, (who missed rounds) lead to unnecessary suffering on the part of my wife.
While I do appreciate the care provided by a select few of the RNs and Techs, overall the care provided was lacking greatly

Av hospital killed my fsther they have terrible nursing staff. Their doctors are the worst too

My brother lost 3 days of his life to this hospital and left worse off than when he arrived.
Most of the staff was short-tempered and discourteous, the facilities were grimy, rooms are cramped, entry doors are falling apart, elevators are slow, waiting rooms were full all over the place. I could continue, but why? I think the reason people gave it a 5 for value was that it's cheap, not because the services are good for the price.
Oh yeah...and I overheard staff speaking about how many people they need to keep in their rooms in order to stay cashflow positive...i.e. how much unnecessary "treatment" they need to provide to make as much money as they want.
No idea how this place stays accredited.

Knowledgeable ER Docs saved my life when my HMO SMG didn't have a clue. Nurse were friendly and helpful. I spent ten days there and the only down side were constant noise, frequent test, two people to a room, no private room, not much privacy.
