Ratings for Dr. Howard Cohen
This comment is almost three decades overdue but hey, there was no ratemds.com back then. When I was seen by Dr. C (1989), he examined a series of three blemishes on my knee and shin. Without confirming that I wished to I go ahead with his recommended treatment, he turned away and reached for some kind of acid he proceeded to use on these three spots. The application of whatever acid was so painful and has permanently scarred my leg; I was in shock then and cannot believe now this butcher is still in practice.
This visit was a big waste of time. He entered the room, looked at my scalp, and proceeded to dictate a note to my GP detailing the treatment. After asking me how to pronounce my last name he corrected me and carried on. When he was done recording I told him I had already done the treatment he suggested. He started recording again and when he was done I once again informed him I had also already tried that RX. He didn't ask me questions at all, barely let me speak to tell him what I had tried thus far, and abruptly left the room twice. He didn't read the paper I filled out or he wouldn't have suggested exercise as a scalp treatment. It was a waste of my time to wait two months to see this specialist in Calgary -- my GP is more helpful.
I am not sure about all of his knowledge. I do know that he is somewhat helpful and knowledgeable. However, if you have a lot of non-serious concerns he will get irritated, impatient and even unreasonably snappy. (I was stunned when he snapped "No. NO MORE QUESTIONS. It's not fair!" My family doctor even told me to ask my dermatologist some of the questions that I asked.) He rushes out of the office often before you can even ask questions. To me, it is important to be able to feel comfortable asking your doctor questions and being on top of your health, so I finally switched doctors. I also switched because he is semi-retired, so for half of the year, you cannot see him at all, and you have to wait for two months prior to his return to even be able to book an appointment following his annual break. I've had him for way too long. When I was in elementary school, he'd always ask me if I had a boyfriend, and it made me uncomfortable the way he'd ask it.
