Dr Tonkin have me the life I have today. I was his patient 18 years ago. Even though I was only a child he always considered my opinion before making his decision. I'm not sure what Doctors are around now, but Dr Tonkin was the best hand and arm surgeon at the time. He is a brilliant doctor who gave me the best opportunity for a normal life. I don't remember him ever running late and he always made the time to see me and my parents.

My daughter was born with foreshortening of the metacarpel in her LH ring finger. This condition did not become apparent until she was 7 years old.Dr Tonkin, in his Public Clinic at RNSH reviewed yearly x-ray of her hands. He was often quite late, and in haste, accompanied by several students-as you would expect of any Specialist in a Public Clinic in a Public Hospital.Dr Tonkin although only spending <5mins per visit was always polite, showed interest, and answered any questions I had.At the age of 13,we returned for the final decision of whether to operate to extend the bone in the finger by 2cm,or to leave it be.Dr Tonkin asked my daughter directly what her wishes were. She replied she did not wish to have surgery,& that rather than consider her condition a'deformity'she said it made her feel'unique. With genuine tears in his eyes he said how impressed he was with her lack of vanity, and that he too did not wish to operate owing to risk of infection.I have nothing but praise for Dr Tonkin.
