HDH staff recommend avoiding COPC on Mondays when Silva is working. Not joking.

Other physicians should take note, this is how it's done! Dr. Silva is profoundly knowledgeable and an expert in her field. She is a tremendous specialist and her work ethic makes her, unquestionably, the driving force behind the new Burr Wing at KGH. Dr. Silva is in fact personable and I have found that any notion of abruptness is attributable to her desire not to waste a second so she can get to the next family. Sure she can be almost be blunt, but she is tough, she is fair and she is available at all hours. She ensures that we know every important detail of our child's diagnosis and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Truly a wonderful doctor. The hospital would be lost without her.

Extremely abrupt and rude. Not a fan of her behaviour and lack of insensitivity.

I have never felt personally offended by Dr. Silva's somewhat abrupt manner, and emotional reserve. She deals with parents of deathly ill and dying children, and does so bravely. She's immensely knowledgeable, tells you clearly what you need to know, and answers every question. She will not hold out false hope. She's always straight with you. She also attends every funeral and every cancer family Christmas party. She is never brutal. That was an unfair comment by someone. It's not her job to hold hands. But she also doesn't suffer fools. She's not going to waste her time discussing unproven holistic feel-good methods with parents who believe they have special insight into appropriate treatment. The woman works 7 days a week and is thin as a rail. She runs on guts and courage and brains. A lot of MDs and nurses go running after a short assignment to pediatric cancer. She's run the whole show in the Kingston region for many years. Is she tough? Damn right. Lucky for us. God bless her.

I am not the one who wrote these words but these words are very true. Dr. Silva is wonderful and I am glad she is here doing as she is. Thank you Dr.Silva. "Dr. Silva is a brilliant physician. She demonstrates her compassion for her patients through her unfailing dedication to excellence in medical care. She is a professional through and through, and does not waste a precious moment on idle chit-chat. I, for one, would not have it any other way. Dr. Silva is an asset to each and every one of her patients, to KGH, and to health care as a whole."

If she needs to distance her feelings, she can at least censor her brutal nature in front of the parents/children or move away from the bedside. Her knowledge may be there, but her people skills are extremely poor, given her specialty. She is diagnosing our children with cancer, not a common cold. A human approach does make a difference. Wish there was a better option here.

I agree that Dr. Silva can be curt and abrasive at times, but given the field that she is in, you have to distance yourself or you would have a nervous breakdown. When my son was diagnosed on Christmas eve, she called in favours to have procedures performed. She is available day or night, no matter what the issue may be. She never passes the buck to a resident. Given a choice between either bedside manner or an amazing knowledge of pediatric oncology, I will ALWAYS take the latter. She has my utmost respect.
