Ratings for Dr. Shady Ashamalla
Less than 2 weeks ago, Dr. Ashamalla performed a pelvic exoneration on my husband. Dr. Ashamalla came and saw me at the 5 hour mark of the surgery. He was kind and informative and put me at ease while I continued to wait. He took time, out of his lunch to explain everything to me. He told me he would come back when his part of the surgery was completed to let me know how it went. He came back and sat with me again. I was blown away by the care and attention not only my husband received on the OR table but me in the waiting room. At this point, Dr Ashamalla estimates another 1.5 hours before my husband was done and he suggested that I get up and walk around, getting me out of the waiting room and he would call my cell personally. He did just that! The surgeon who had just performed a 8.5 hour life-saving surgery called my cell phone. Once he knew where I was in the hospital he came to find me and let me know everything had gone exactly as he had hoped. Given the intensity and difficulty of the day, Dr Ashamalla excelled in the OR and with me “the spouse” waiting. And, Dr Ashamalla manages his patients pain different than other surgeons we have encountered. I can not say enough about his pain-management protocol. My husband was up and walking around approximately 12 hours post-op. He was able to self-manage his pain and was never groggy or in severe pain. Usually post-op my husbands personality changes and his pain is almost unbearable. This time, he was himself... which allowed him to self-motivate to move, walk and manage his own pain/discomfort, this was by far the best recovery he has had with any of his surgeries. I can not say enough about the experience we have had with Dr Ashamalla, the team at Sunnybrook and Colorectal cancer Canada
Dr. Ashamalla saved my brother-in-law. Another surgeon in Ontario said "there is nothing I can do". Dr. Ashamalla had a plan, plan A B and C...just in case! He was amazing with my BIL and family on surgery day and actually came out to talk to us. He was reassuring, and so kind. I wish we had found Dr. Ashamalla at the initial diagnosis 3 years ago. Thank you for everything you do for your patients.
Dr. Ashamalla has been my husbands Oncologist since December 2016 when my husband was diagnosed with Colon Cancer. My husband went from being quite and devastated person with the diagnosis to a confident and positive person because of Dr. Ashamalla. After the surgery Dr. Ashamalla gave my husband the reassurance that all will be fine and he will be under his care until he is completely cured. My husband tells everyone that he looks forward going to see Dr. Ashamalla because he always makes him feel good after meeting with him and he has the courage to fight anything. My whole family is so indebted to Dr. Ashamalla for the care and concerns he has for his patients especially my husband Elio. After a year and a half he is still under his care and that makes my husband smile therefore it makes us all smile. God Bless you Dr. Ashamalla for all you do for your patients. Mafalda and Elio.
My husband has been fighting colorectal cancer since March 2015, in November of 2017 through a CT scan, a reoccurrence was found. The original surgeon stated that there was nothing they could do. I reached out the Colorectal Cancer Canada who introduced us to Dr. Shady Ashamalla. He was so calm as he spoke to us, he provided us reassurance in both a professional and respectful way. Dr. Ashamalla talked about the plan to move my husband back to health. He described the surgery which is complex but possible and outlined everything we needed to know. His entire team is wonderful, respectful and compassionate. As soon as we met Dr. Ashamalla we knew that he was the surgeon for my husband, and moved our care immediately to his team. I can not say enough about Dr. Ashamalla and his incredible competence, knowledge and manner. We are now 2 weeks from surgery and my husband, our family and I are calm in the knowledge that we have the most skilled surgeon leading this charge of ensuring that my husband moves to optimal health and cancer free. I wish we had found him at my husbands original diagnosis but I am thankful every single day that we have found him now. Sincerely, Christina Halladay
In 2015 I was diagnosed with stage iii rectal cancer. My life came to a sudden stop. I was a young wife and mother of two. How could this be happening to me? I didn't know what to do. Colorectal Cancer Canada introduced me to Dr. Ashamalla who was my savior. He calmed me down and explained how I was going to be treated with a temporary ileostomy, chemo, radiation, surgery and then more chemo. He was by my side every step of the way. He supported me and my entire family. He was compassionate, caring, extremely knowledgeable, and spoke to me in a language I could understand. I always felt comfortable around him and so cared for. Today, I am cancer free because of Dr. Ashamalla. He gave me my life back! I cannot begin to thank him for this gift. He himself is a gift to everyone who is lucky enough to find him when diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Everyone I know who has been treated by him feels as I do which is why I felt compelled to honor him at a gala I threw in June 2016. He truly deserved it. Sincerely, Marie Taurasi, rectal cancer survivor
