Ratings for Dr. Shady Ashamalla
Dr. Ashamalla is the kindest and most caring surgeon. I was so fortunate to be referred to him. He called me at home on a Saturday to reassure me before I even had my first appointment with him. An absolutely wonderful person and an amazing surgeon.
An outstanding surgeon! Dr. A is a true doctor in the full sense of the word. Confident, talented and amazing bedside manner, he was truly a blessing! The nurse navigator, Mehwish, was also incredible and made sure to get all the tests very quickly...what an incredible team!
Dr. Ashamalla saved my a@$! Literally! I was told I needed to have my anus removed in order to cure my cancer, instead Dr. Ashamalla did his TAMIS/TME operation (that I only found by googling!!) and was able to put me back together. I do not live in Toronto and had to travel from far to be treated at Sunnybrook but me and my family know it was absolutely worth it!
Outstanding surgeon!! And an outstanding person! I just finished chemotherapy after my cancer operation and am now officially cancer free! I personally want to thank Dr. Ashamalla and his entire team at Sunnybrook, including Paul the head nurse, for the unbelievable care I received.
Dr. Ashamalla is the most talented and kind physician we have ever encountered. My mother was in and out of multiple hospitals and being dismissed as 'palliative' everywhere we went. Dr. Ashamalla was so thoughtful and knowledgeable with his aproach to her rectal cancer. He explained in great detail what his recommendations were and he listened to all our questions and answered so wisely. The surgery was an amazing success and he even called my mother at home the day she was discharged to ensure she was recovering well, which she was! I live in the US and came to all my mother's visits and after meeting countless docs across the continent I can say with complete certainty that Dr. Ashamalla is the most outstanding physician I have ever met and I could not recommend him more highly to anyone with colorectal cancer!
Unfortunate experience with consultation with this doctor. Consultation was not educative. Dr. was not respectful of my options and was quite directive. Dr. did not speak professionally to me and said "cut that ugly thing out" referring to a benign polyp. Dr. bragged about himself and hospital and denigrated his colleague at another hospital from whom I was seeking second opinion. He forcefully stated that this dr. who has a fellowship in colorectal surgery was a general surgeon and could not do the job. Dr. Ashmalla pressured me into booking surgery with him in a month's time and was cross with me for not being thrilled to have invasive surgery immediately. The navigating nurse also caused anxiety by booking me for tests and discussing cancer treatment before disclosing biopsy results to me which were benign. I experienced a lot of unnecessary anxiety by the way I was treated and would not recommend this doctor or hospital.
Dr. Ashmalla is more than a skilled surgery. He is a gift to the community he serves. He is what all young doctors should aspire to be. A true healthcare professional. If he wasn't a surgeon, I'm pretty sure he would be devoting his life to helping people in some other fantastical ways. He not only took out my cancer but he put in its' place his bit of humanity.
Dr. Ashamalla saved me from getting a permanent pouch and a huge incision with his 'natural access' technique for rectal cancer! Instead I have no incision and had a very temporary stoma!!! What a difference. He is a pioneer, an innovator, a true gentleman and the kindest physician I have ever met. I thank God every day for the circumstances that landed me at Sunnybrook and lucky enough to have such an incredibly gifted surgeon. And a very special thank you to my amazing family doctor for referring me to him...you know who you are!
Dr Ashamalla is a gracious genuine man with the wonderful ability to explain and give confidence. He is a superior surgeon and I am so thankful to have on my team. A true gift!! His staff and associates deserve a huge thank you as their professionalism and support gave me and my wife the confidence and comfort that is needed in the tough days of dealing with cancer .
