Hi, I first saw the Dr 18 months ago & my prognosis was not good after a series of complications from a serious vehicle accident a long time ago had left me with some severe ongoing problems & amputation was seen as the only option. Since then, under his guidance & 3 surgeries later my foot is now the best it has ever been. I can say that my case did present him with lots of complicated problems & following his aftercare programs, my recovery, each time has been remarkable. After seeing other surgeons who gave me no hope, Dr Nihal was realistic, no false hope & said that it could be that amputation may be the best option. Then he looked at what he could do bit by bit & slowly but surely, put it all back together & after being on crutches for years prior I was able to walk my daughter down the aisle at her wedding with the aid of a walking stick last week end. Words will never express how my life has changed, where pain was a constant & walking a nightmare, all I can say is a humble thank you & all my steps I now take are due to your care & expertise, a real life changer. Forever grateful Brian Cavanagh

My journey started over 2 years ago when a tackle at football training session ended me in A&E, whilst there they did an X-ray which showed no fractures just possible ligament damage, I got sent home with crutches and some strong painkillers. After three weeks of pain and still not being able to put weight through my ankle, I went back to my doctors and got sent to get an ultrasound at Iris, they gave me the misdiagnosis that nothing was wrong. After that I went to my local physio and they just tried to get me back up on my feet. About 10 weeks later I couldn't do much without pain and got sent for an MRI and found out that I had ruptured my ATFL and some other inside damage. After that I went back to my physio, got told I would probably just need a injection for the swelling and got sent to a sport medicine dr, he misdiagnosed me with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and sold us an expensive pot of cream. I then went back to physio and they told me to just work on strength and that I wouldn't need surgery, "a lot of athletes have to play through worse injuries". After that I get that no one believed me and I still couldn't properly play sports. I stopped going to physio as it wasn't getting me anywhere. About 18 months post injury I went back to a new dr after a rough season of football, just trying to play through the pain. He sent me for another ultrasound and then from them results got sent to Pindara Physio. I go at told there that if after a few appointments there was no improvement then I should go and see a surgeon. After no improvements I went back to my doctor for the referral, after being impatient I went to one in Brisbane while still waiting for my appointment with Dr Nihal. The surgeon in Brisbane told me there was nothing wrong with my ankle, just some complex regional pain syndrome, I should buy some good trainers and go running by the beach. I knew he was wrong as I had tried everything. Then when the time came for our Dr Nihal appointment I wasn't too hopeful but I was hoping to get my ankle fixed. As soon as we went in to see him I got asked questions that I had never been asked before and questions that just made it click in my head, after a big talk about the M62 we decided it was best to have my ligaments reconstructed. After a long surgery with more wrong inside than initially thought I am now in the road to recovery and extremely thankful for Dr Nihal and his staff who helped with every single question and also rushed me in after a slip at school. I cannot thank you all enough. We are all extremely grateful. Thank you Kayla

Sorry everyone. This is a long comment, but I need to highlight a few anomalies with the system. While at work, I stood down off a ladder with my left leg. A 2kg battery slipped from my left hand towards my left boot. I flinched and stood heavily on the toe of my steel capped boot. My boot bent in half and I felt a twinge in my left foot. I thought nothing of it. Two days later I went to Accident and Emergency at the Gold Coast hospital because I had begun limping and my foot was red and swollen. The x-ray showed a broken 5th metatarsal bone!! It had snapped clean in half! A nurse put me in a foot/knee plaster cast. I left on crutches and told to come back in 7 days. I attended the Gold Coast hospital fracture clinic 7 days later. They took an x-ray. A very young doctor then saw me and said the fracture will just heal naturally as the blood supply around the fracture would cause the fracture to mend itself. He could tell I was disbelieving so he called another doctor who was of the same opinion. He instructed the plaster cast people to remove the cast and give me a hard-sole sandal to wear. They then showed me how to use the crutches so that I could bear weight on my foot as I walked. They said that I should be able to walk without crutches and one day I will just kick off the sandal and be good as gold. Anyway, long story short. Almost five weeks later my GP referred me to see Doctor Nihal at the Gold Coast Foot and Ankle Clinic. I walked into Dr Nihal’s clinic at Pindara Hospital with a hard soled sandal, an X-ray and loaded up on Panadol. Dr Nihal was obviously troubled that I had been walking on a swollen foot with a completely broken/fractured 5th metatarsal bone for so long. Dr Nihal then booked me in for Urgent surgery. He immediately sent me to Benowa Physio to make sure I passed all the fitness/health tests to undergo surgery. I was also trained on the use of all the equipment/apparatus I would be using throughout my recovery. Because six weeks had passed since my accident, Dr Nihal had to perform miracle surgery which entailed taking a bone graft from my heel to facilitate the repair of the old degraded fracture of my 5th metatarsal bone. He straightened up the two separate bits of bone with some heel bone and clamped it up. He sent in his own nurse, Kerry (who did a fish mouth cast) on my foot. He came to see me every day in hospital and gave strict instructions to the hospital staff about my care. I was Non-Weight Bearing. This meant a wheelchair for a month and crutches and moon boot for two weeks. Then weight bearing physio began with crutches and moon boot for a month. I was progressed to a hard-soled sandal for two weeks and then a month intense physio. I feel fantastic that I will be returning to work. It has been a great experience dealing with Dr Nihal and the Gold Coast Foot and Ankle clinic, why? Clearly a leader in your field Friendly and personable Honest Positive but realistic nature Respected by industry contacts Brilliant orthopaedic surgeon So, thank you Dr Aneel Nihal. You are an asset to the Gold Coast, to Queensland, to Australia and I would also like to add the planet earth! Chris Park

After injuring my ankle and being misdiagnosed I was referred to Dr Nihal. He quickly found the real problem and recommended surgery, this was 4 months after the accident. The surgery was quite complicated as there was residue from an infection early on combined with a foreign body being in the wound and a cut cartilage which holds a tendon in place. He cleared the wound, removed the foreign body and repaired the cut cartilage. It is now mid January and I am having physio and hope to be back to work in early March. Dr Nihals knowledge is exceptional and his ability to explain the procedures and rehab in understandable language is a great plus. Dr Nihals staff are extremely professional and the clinic is very well run. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him. Thanks again Dr Nihal. From AW

Three years ago I had a compound fracture of the left ankle, then a fast trip to hospital by ambulance, resulting in surgery to repair the damage, all was well for about one year, then regular acute pain was felt for the next two years, resulting in me only sleeping on my right side, it was impossible to sleep on the left side as the ankle ached via pressure, causing interrupted sleep, I could only wear flat shoes and never boots, it seemed to rule my life and depressed me, but then, thank God I chose another surgeon, Dr. Aneel Nihal to assess the post op problems, I can only say that it was a relief to be pain free and to be in the hands of a very accomplished surgeon , who takes the time to explain fully, each step to recovery, Dr Nihal cares for his patients throughout the whole procedure, his staff are friendly and follow up all appointments for his patients, thank you Dr Nihal for giving me freedom from pain. Dr Aneel Nihal. Sub Talar Fusion right foot. After working for the past two years with a very sore foot and two cortisone injections I was referred to Dr Nihal in October 2016. After initial xrays and consultation and then a spectrum CT scan, Dr Nihal explained that due to previous injuries my sub talar joint had deterioriated and would need a sub talar fusion to remove the pain . He talked me through the full process including an assessment by physio as to how I was to manage with non weight period post operation. The sub talar fusion was completed by Dr Nihal on the 11th January 2017, and after 12 weeks I was back at work. 10 months on I am jogging without pain and back to full fitness, and the foot is strong and pain free. I am glad that I chose Dr Nihal. His staff are excellent and talked me through the processes and why I needed to take the actions that I they recommended. ie rest and non weight bearing, partial weight bearing and use of the moon boot. He is highly respected by the nurses on the wards and even the xray people who have been at his lectures on the requirements need to get the specific elements in his required xrays. I cannot recommend him highly enough for any one having foot pain.
