Ratings for Dr. Ralph Hawkins
I started seeing Dr.Hawkins when I was 15. I was terrified and extremely ill, but Dr.Hawkins did an amazing job of making me calm! His bed side manner is out of this world amazing. I felt like for once, I was being heard. He explains things thoroughly until you understand it and answers any questions you may have. I would reccommend anyone looking for an Internist to seek out Dr. Ralph Hawkins. He is the best decision I ever made. :)
I cannot express how incredible this man is. To have him as an internist is the difference between recovering and suffering. He is brilliant and authentic and invested in the well being of his patients. He even came in on his day off, later in the evening to provide insight to the emergency doctors who were struggling to help.
I have been a patient of Dr. Hawkins for 5 years. I was prompted to leave feedback after another patient of his, a friend of mine, informed me of two unfavorable reviews on this site. I was sick for 28 years before I was referred by chance to Dr. Hawkins. I was so sick I could no longer think straight, was an emotional mess, and had absolutely zero energy. Every doctor felt it was fibromyalgia or would refer me to a psychiatrist or psychologist. I had a symptom list the length of my arm that just happened to reflect the symptoms of Lyme on the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation website. Doctors would just roll their eyes when I would present them with this. They never believed that my symptoms were the result of any "real" disease. Enter Dr. Hawkins. Before I even showed up at my first appointment, he had already reviewed every record available, including diagnostic imaging, and asked all the right questions; this led to me remembering a tick bite as a child, when all my symptoms started. From there it snowballed. He lined up testing and was even understanding when it took me a year to get the money together to get it done. When it came back positive I hugged him. I was so happy to finally find someone who believed me. Every appointment he would relay more information about the treatment of Lyme disease, studies and papers being written, and where he got the information from. He reads everything! I can see some people would take this as arrogant; I think he is more confident, not arrogant. He has more than a decade of medical training and is always going to conferences and learning more to share with his patients. He knows his stuff, but even he admits he is not perfect, but he tries. I had 2 years of intensive treatment where the first year was spent wishing I would die from the herxing caused by dieoff from the treatments. By the second year I started to feel human again. In the third year I went back to school. By the fourth year I was working full time again. I am still on maintenance treatment and still struggle with fatigue and several autoimmune conditions as a result of the Lyme disease, but I am leaps and bounds better than I was that first day in his office 5 years ago. I have my life back. Arrogant (not my words) or not, he is the best of the best. I have seen him speak at the Lyme disease conference in Ottawa and hear regularly from his patients who agree he is the be all and end all of treatment for Lyme disease. He can't fix everyone, but he sure as heck will try if you are willing to put in the work too. I pitty anyone who isn't yet his patient as his wait list is huge, but if you are in Alberta and at the end of your rope, I highly recommend getting your name in. Extra kudos go to his nurses Lindsay and Lisa. Side note: There is often a bit of a wait, but I know it's because he is thorough and I am okay waiting for that reason. I am grateful to be his patient.
Dr. Hawkins and staff are amazing, compassionate, professional and mostly knowledgeable. Although I have some permanent issues, side effects of my Lyme, I am in remission mostly, because of his treatment. I am so grateful. Thank you to Ralph and Lindsay for all your care!
This doctor Has no interest in hearing what the sick patient thinks. He expects you to listen, follow advice and keep your opinions to yourself. He is condescending and frankly rude if you dare to question his opinion. I was seen at South Campus Hospital. His treatments made me ill. I won’t see this doctor again.
The Dr. Hawkins I saw was one of the most arrogant, pompous, condescending individuals I have ever met. If he cared half as much about his patients as he did about making himself look good then maybe he would actually help people. He seems to enjoy being the "voice" of people with Lyme disease but I don't think he cares about his patients, only about his own prestige and power. If he isn't the one who comes up any idea about treatment, then it is dismissed. It's his way or nothing! I assume the people who write the good reviews are so relieved to find someone who admits they have Lyme disease that they will accept anything he says or does. Other than prescribing antibiotics I don't think Dr Hawkins has anything else to offer.
I can't say enough about this Doctor! ! His level of insight and ability to see the bigger picture is incredible. He is well educated on all scientific fronts about tick borne disease but ensures all differentials are considered. Under his care I am finally slowly getting better which has taken years to get figured out with referrals to over 25 different specialists. I finally have hope of considerable recovery and can participate in life!! So much gratitude!
