Ratings for Dr. Paul Smith
Mr Paul Smith has been an excellent surgeon for me. He diagnosed a calcite spur in my spinal column at T7, with further issues at L4/5. Both operations were performed in St Vincent hospital. He ordered an MRI scan and performed the first operation soon after our initial meeting. He obtained information about the calcite spur from specialists in Vancouver. The removal of the hard calcite spur took 10 hours painstaking work, and other doctors later told me that I had been very lucky to have Paul Smith as my surgeon. Before both operations Paul Smith clearly explained the risks and subsequent intensive care, hospital and rehab requirements. He was in contact with me daily before and after each operation, even when traveling interstate. His staff at reception were always very helpful. I have been visiting his clinic for 4 years and have been reassured by his care and help. All spinal issues seem now resolved and I feel very grateful to him and his staff.
Dr Smith queried my diagnosis, which had been confirmed by several doctors. He pretty much said suck it up. Gave me a five minute exam whist i was seated, certainly not thorough and I felt it was an after thought. . Was dismissive, I wouldn't recommend him for anyone with back pain. I felt like I was a total waste of his time.
I now know he misdiagnosed me. Incredibly unhelpful and gave zero treatment options and no other referrals. Left me feeling hopeless, unsupported and totally confused, not to mention upset. Have since found a correct diagnosis and other treatment options. Receptionist staff are fine, but that's not helpful for this rating. Not recommended..
I was a patient of paul smiths last November where he did a MVD operation for my trigenimal neuralgia, unfortunately it was not a success. The issue I have with him is his blatant arrogance he showed towards me at our follow up appointment. When I asked him what else could be done because I was still in incredible pain he smugly suggested nothing else could be done and maybe I should go back on meds,i.e. If I can't fix it no one can. Also refused to address my sciatica problem,I would certainly not recommend Paul to anyone one was most displeased with his lack of compassion and pompous attitude!!!!!!
Very nice chap, but not the best with elderly patients hard of hearing. His original back hardware gave way and operation had to be repeated on elderly parent. The repeated deep anaesthetic triggered total short term memory loss which has not improved. Neither did the back pain, even after many months in post-operative brace. In retrospect, too quick to agree to surgery.
Mr Paul Smith is an absolute professional. He listens, I mean really listens and has such a natural empathy and care for your condition. He gives advice and explanations in a way that non medical people easily understand. He's calm and very very personable. So very happy to be in his good hands
Its difficult to put in words what a remarkable experience i had with Dr Smith and his staff. It is very very confronting to be diagnosed with a serious medical condition that needs specialist care. My symptoms came on quite quickly and thankfully my GP had sufficient concern that this may be a serious condition requiring the expertise of a neurosurgeon. My GP spoke with Dr Smith directly and i rang Dr Smiths rooms the following day to organise a time to see him. He was able to see me the following day as "an add on". His staff were amazing making sure i knew where to go and making sure i had all the right scans for Dr Smith to review. They were very reassuring over the phone and nothing was too much trouble. it was late in the day when i saw him and i overhead whilst i was waiting he had cancelled an important meeting to make time to see him. I thought that this guy was pretty committed. Any how it was good and bad news. The bad news was i needed an operation but the good news was i could be fixed. The explanation was comprehensive but done in a way which i could understand. Sure there were risks but what major surgery doesn't have risks!! The admission to hospital was done efficiently. A small hiccup occurred but Dr Smiths staff ironed it out for me. Very very helpful people. I was admitted to the hospital, and that experience was very smooth. I met all of Dr Smiths team and they were fantastic. Everyone took the time to speak to me and opaline what was going on. Really very very good. My operation was a great success. I woke up feeling really good. it really was very surprising. I had to say a few days in the hospital. maybe the food could have been better but its a hospital not a restaurant. I had all my follow ups with Dr Smith and he communicated with my GP so he knew what was going on. I have to go back to see him with a follow up scan at 6 months. My advice - neuro stuff go and see this guy. He seems to me to be pretty switched on and really knows what he is doing. He has a great team in his office and also seems to have a great team in the hospital. All in all a very positive experience
Absolutely fantastic. Spent plenty of time explaining everything. Great result. Great staff. Great follow up. Could not be happier.
