Ratings for Dr. Richard Chau
My dentist referred me to Dr. Chau for wisdom teeth extraction, as my situation was deemed "too risky". I had a consultation, and subsequently had three wisdom teeth removed. Several things came to mind about the experiences: Dr Chau is extremely knowledgeable about the field, and provided detailed answers about my questions. He also performed the procedures very efficiently. It took him about 60 mins for three teeth. I was surprised, as my previous procedure, removing only one erupted upper wisdom tooth with my regular dentist, required about the same amount of time. Most importantly, Dr Chau and his staff kept me at ease the whole time with their professional attitude. While I expected the worst, given the magnitude of the procedure, it wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. Some users here have talked about Dr Chau's pricing. Although I wouldn't call it low, I strongly believe that you get what you pay for with Dr Chau. So let's just call it's on the upper threshold of what I consider reasonable.
I had two wisdom teeth extracted by a family dentist that did not go very well and ended up with a severe sinus infection along with a trip to the E.R. to have IV antibiotics. But luckily I had a dentist from that same office referred me to Dr. Richard Chau. I was quite nervous upon meeting him as I had such a bad experience but Dr. Chau gave me confidence in him as he was able to answer all my questions in great details. He took the time to explain the procedure to me until I fully understood, and not once did I feel he was in a rush. Dr. Chau's assistant as well as Eva and another lady at the reception desk was always very welcoming and showed great pride in working for an extremely reputable Oral and Facial Surgeon. Dr. Chau was very specific and gave me in great details about after surgery care and his staff called me the following morning to check up on me. He made sure to see me again not once but twice to follow up on my recovery. I have fully recovered from my surgery and is so thankful to have met Dr. Chau and his team. I would highly recommend Dr. Chau to anyone in search of an oral surgeon, he is knowledgeable with many many years of experience in this field. His office is located in heart of central Richmond with ample free parking, the office itself is immaculate, and best of all, his staff are always on hand to answer any questions you may have. And lastly also most importantly, Dr. Chau is very personable so you will feel comfortable and he will go above and beyond to make sure your visit and care before and after surgery will exceed your expectations. I have taken the time to write this review because I truly believe he is worthy of my time to do so. Dr. Chau and his team has surpassed my expectations.
I feel like Dr. Chau saved my life! I was in great pain and sick from not being able to eat and taking pain killers and I had paid for numerous consultation fees from so called dental specialists who thought my tooth extraction was too difficult for various reasons. When I finally found Dr. Chau it was like I had finally got out of h*ll and into heaven! Dr. Chau did not make me wait even one extra minute plus he did an incredible (and painless) job on my tooth. After experiencing so many other surgeons, I can't say enough about how much better Dr. Chau treated me!!! He is VERY,very knowledgeable and competant and he cares about his patients.
I'm glad that my dentist referred me to Dr Richard Chau for 4 wisdom teeth removal. I had a comfortable and speedy recovery all because of his excellent skills and kindness. The staffs are very friendly and professional. I would highly recommend all my friends and families to Dr Chau for dental treatments.
Dr. Chau did a great job removing one of my teeth . He is a very nice person and makes you feel at ease as soon as he walk in . He took time to answer all my questions and and i felt relaxed about the procedure . His office staff is great and i can say i look forward to going back to get my implant done in a few month. I forgot to mention he also pulled out 2 wisdom teeth of my wife and she was also very comfortable with Dr Chau doing the surgery ..... Thank you so much Dr Chau and i would recommend his service to anybody ...
Dr. Chau performed a complicated surgery on my mother and did a wonderful job. She suffers from periodontal disease and all the teeth in her mouth had to be removed! She has never seen a dentist so she was scared. During the procedure, Dr. Chau also placed metal implants into her gums to hold her future dentures. Dr. Chau is extremely personable, experienced, and knowledgeable. My mother didn’t feel a thing after such a major surgery! His assistant, Gloria, was a charm to work with and comforted my mother throughout the 1.5 hour surgery. Dr. Chau’s receptionist even called us after the surgery to see how we were doing and reminded us how to take care of any bleeding. Overall, I could not be happier with his professional service. The quality of work and training of his staff is top notch. Some other people may complain that his staff has poor English skills, but we had no problems communicating with them. His office is modern with state of the art equipment and also extremely clean, which is a sign of good safety practices with clean equipment! Most importantly, my mother loves the results with her new dentures that attach onto the implants. She now smiles all the time to show her teeth.
I had my 4 wisdom teeth extraction done by Dr. Chau under local anesthetic. The office has very nice staff who answered all of my questions before and after the surgery. Dr. Chau was very friendly, calm and professional- made me very relaxed before the procedure as I was terrified. The procedure was quick and painless- just pressure here and there (my teeth were still covered by gums). The first couple days I survived with just regular Tylenol! Dr. Chau was very attentive and his staff called to make sure I was well. Thank you to the amazing staff and Dr. Chau! Few months later now, it's like my wisdom teeth were never there :D
His technique for removing teeth is good but his freezing skill is very poor. He likes to stab you with the shot other dentists like to work in the shot so you won't feel the pain of getting a shot.
Dr. Richard Chau's response
We are sorry to hear that your experience with local anesthesia at our office was not up to your expectation. Most patients tolerate the local anesthetic injection quite well even though there is a mild stinging sensation. Unfortunately, it is difficult to make an injection completely pain free and each injection experience is different depending on the location in the mouth, whether the tooth is infected, and the overall pain threshold of a patient. For example, the injections in the roof of the mouth are usually the most painful, and teeth that are infected are more difficult to get numb. Some patients also are naturally more difficult to get numb due to anatomical differences in the jaw bone and the location of the nerve to be anesthetized. Using topical anesthetic prior to injection can help dull or reduce the sensation of the needle poke, but does not remove the stinging sensation while the anesthetic solution is injected. The anesthetic solution is slightly acidic and unfortunately will always sting. This pain is similar to eating a lemon (or another acidic food) when one has a canker sore or open wound in the mouth. For patients who are scared or cannot tolerate the local anesthetic injection, we offer pre-operative oral sedation or intravenous sedation. We have also investigated the use of a needle-free anesthetic delivery system but we feel the technology is not quite right yet for use in the oral cavity. If in the future there are improved anesthetic delivery systems or techniques we would use them within our office. Our goal is to make each patient appointment as comfortable as possible.

Got my 4 wisdom teeth removed and it went really well. I expected the worst and so it turned out more then good. Had really little swelling the first day, barely anything to be honest and no pain. Everytime i felt some pain dr chau would give me some more anesthetic. The procedure was quick. 30-45 mins short. Had no pain after and was just consistent on t3 pain killers for 1 day although i never felt pain was coming, just took it cuz i was scared that it would. Woke up next day, pain free, no swelling at all. Maybe even a skinnier face. Would recommend him as he is really informative and gives good patient care.
