As a Morehead Scholar (now known as Morehead-Cain) at the university he was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and also served as a drum major in the marching band. Dr. Picot remained in Chapel Hill to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and later completed a general practice residency at the Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, SC.\r\n\r\nIn September of 2009 Dr. Picot opened SouthEnd Dentistry at the age of 28 with the vision of providing the best in dental care, utilizing the latest in technology, in a soothing environment for its guests. In a space that used to serve as a private golf club, Dr. Picot designed and built a dental practice that doesn't seem like a dental office. Countless hours are spent designing and executing customized treatment plans for our patients and re-strategizing how to create an even better experience for them. \r\n\r\nDr. Picot takes a comprehensive approach to treatment planning while practicing conservative dentistry. This means that he uses a team of specialists to strategize and design the best treatment plan for all of his patients. Patients are referred to Dr. Picot to treat complex dental issues. His goal is not only to treat a patient's dental disease or main concern, but to make sure that the dentistry lasts as long as possible and that the cause of disease is addressed. Dr. Picot's goal is not to \"patch up\" dental disease but to take a look at the big picture (TMJ, occlusion, orthodontics, gum and bone health, cavities) to assess what can be done in your best interests. \r\n\r\nService has always been a priority for Dr. Picot as he founded the UNC Malawi Dental Project, an annual service project encompassing free dental care and education on HIV/AIDS in Malawi Africa. Philanthropy has extended to donating a student locker room at new UNC School of Dentistry building and establishing the annual CommitMEN Scholarship Fund with fellow alumni at Shaker Heights High School. Devotion to service continues through annual participation in Give Kids a Smile, bus dentistry, and volunteering at various schools, recreation centers and career fairs. I visited SouthEnd Dentistry for a 6 month cleaning. They performed X-rays and a cleaning and then informed me I needed a root canal and had a handful of cavities. I was overwhelmed with the amount of information and extreme confidence that Dr. picot displayed and agreed to put a down payment for the root canal appointment despite having 0 pain in the said area of root canal or cavities. I found it very off putting to have to put a \"down payment\" on this procedure and felt pressured to say yes. After (thankfully) getting a second opinion at another dental office, I was told I in no way needed a root canal, had one small cavity, and that SouthEnds X-ray machine was clearly broken because the images had strange mirrored markings. My new dentist was appalled and confused of where the idea that I needed a root canal came from. So happy I have changed dentists and did not go through with an extremely costly, time consuming UNNECESSARY root canal. SouthEnd Dentistry did refund me for the down payment in a timely matter.\r\n\r\nDr. Picot also has incentives to write a good review online by offering free teeth whitening for writing a review. I believe this explains the many positive reviews, at least partially. \r\n\r\nNow over a three years later, I have had no more cavities and no issues with the tooth that needed a \"root canal\". I have been going to my second opinion dentist since and am very happy. I also had a new coworker who hadn't heard my story go there for a teeth cleaning and have the exact same thing happen. Luckily, she has a family member who is a dentist a few states away and they advised her what was needed and what wasn't.\r\n\r\nI am appalled that I can't blindly trust someone who I typically hold in such a high regard - a doctor. After talking to many coworkers, friends, and family, this is apparently common practice to try to charge people for more work than they need.
