Ruffin operated on my left wrist to take out a bone chip between my scaphoid and radius, a pretty straight forward procedure but instead of stopping there he did some cleaning out of arthritis inflammation on other parts of my hand. During that he scrapped to much cartilage around the scaphoid and caused it to become dislodged and rotated 30-40 degrees, this caused excruciating pain and during my follow-up he x-rayed the hand and discovered his error. He decided the only fix was to extract the scaphoid and fuse the entire hand together to support the thumb using 5 pins. during that surgery he inadvertently severed the tendon holding the hand to the arm. The pain was so extreme but he just stated it was one of the pins rubbing on the radius and wait till the fusion took and he would remove the pins. It was now 5 months since the first surgery and still never acknowledged his mistake of either surgery. His staff would not refill any pain medicine and got so bad he gave me his personal cell phone number if I had a problem getting it. After 6 months of suffering he decided to remove the pins which also went bad, he only could get 3 and a half pins out and one was bent so bad it could not be removed. I left his care at that point and went to another hand surgeon. During that initial visit I was informed of all the problems, the hand had fallen off the radius and ulna and I had developed RSD (reflex sympathy dystrophy) and that would have to be treated before any other surgery’s could be preformed. I went through 18 Ganglion blocks in my left neck then the only fix was to remove the lower row of bones in my hand and cut the ball off the radius an ulna and fuse it all together with 2, 8" 1/4" metal rods driven in between my knuckles into my radius. This also was not without complications and resulted in another 5 surgery’s but today it is okay. The incompetence of Ruffin is inexcusable and in the State of Oklahoma you cannot sue a doctor because you cannot get another doctor to testify due to only one malpractice insurance company issuing and the testifying doctor will loose his/her insurance, the only way was to bring a doctor from another state which was told is not good. Richard Ruffin is not a doctor I could or would ever recommend if only for the point he never would admit his mistakes and allowed me to suffer for 6 months. As a Christian, I forgive him but I feel he should not have a medical license to practice hand surgery.
