My dad was referred to Dr. Firstenberg for a lung mass. On his first visit, my dad brought records of his prior melanoma, including a prior biopsy. Dr. Firstenberg ordered a biopsy of the lung mass, it was inconclusive, stating it could be lung cancer, but could not rule out melanoma. He did not do his due diligence as a physician and oncologist and order another biopsy, rather he decided to move forward with the diagnosis of lung cancer. Months later after my dad's cancer worsened on treatment with older, lesser used chemo drugs (which caused chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy until the day he died), he was referred to UT Southwestern Hospital for another biopsy on additional metastasis, which confirmed he had melanoma, NOT LUNG CANCER. So months were wasted treating the wrong cancer, he was poisoned with the wrong chemo drugs, all while the cancer multiplied in his body. The chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy made him too weak to start treatment for the melanoma. He died 6 months after the diagnosis of the lung mass. He told me before he died that on multiple occasions he asked Dr. Firstenberg if he should get a second opinion regarding his cancer and treatment and each time he was discouraged from doing so. He trusted his doctor and this likely shortened his life.
