I was in the room during the entire appointment. Dr. Hunt seemed eager to perform the surgery to improve my dad's quality of life. That is all well and good, but Dr. Hunt made no mention of any of the risks of such a surgery—I had to ask him to clearly state the risks to my dad. In the end, Dad decided to have the surgery, which was the worst decision my father ever made. The surgery itself went well, but the nightmare soon followed. At one of the after-care pt appointments, Dad experienced excruciating pain and felt certain that something was wrong. He was transferred to a rehab center where he developed serious edema. My husband and I immediately took Dad to see Dr. Hunt, who, upon a cursory assessment of Dad's condition, assured us that Dad's knee was tracking just fine, and that Dad should see his primary physician for any other health problems. In effect, Dr. Hunt washed his hands of my father. Immediately following the appointment, we drove my dad to the VA Hospital where the medical staff quickly determined that Dad was in congestive heart failure as well as the early stages of kidney failure. They worked fast and smart and saved my dad's life. But he never walked again. His knee replacement was so far off track that no other orthopedic surgeon in the Twin Cities would risk revision surgery.
