I had Clear Lens Exchange in the summer of 2014. Everything went amazingingly well - not even a problem with dry eyes after the surgery. I now have 20/20 vision. Dr. Smallman and his staff were amazing and courteous and I am more than happy with the results of my surgery.
Unfortunately was referred to Dr. Donald Smallman in 2010 for cataract eye surgery. For $1000 extra he placed in a completely unsuitable lens. I left with vision I could not live with and he could care less. In my opinion this man is out for profit only and should leave the medical profession. Luckily for me I was able to find a real professional ophthalmologist in Mississauga to restore my vision .
Dr. Smallman saw my son immediately for an emergency visit at his office after he was hit in the eye with a tennis racquet at school. The technicians were super nice with my 5yr old son, making him feel comfortable. Dr. Smallman did a thorough examination of his eye. He ended up having bleeding in the back of his eye. Dr. Smallman gave him special drops to help control the bleeding and help his eye heal. Dr. Smallman saw my son 4 different times in the span of a week to make sure that his eye was healing without any complications. I would definently come back to see Dr. Smallman without hesitation.
Unprofessional! After a year of appointments, I finally scheduled surgery for cataracts. Received a call 2 weeks prior to cancel and no alternative date available. Apparently, Dr. Smallman was moving onto other interests. His actions has now left several clients having to find a new Ophthalmologist and going through the process all over again. Not to mention the stress on his staff. A Professional would have finalized his commitments. Who knows what the real truth is.
My mother has seen Dr. Smallman a few times for glaucoma. She always has to wait for over an hour and at 88 yrs old that is very hard on her. And after all that waiting he actually only saw her for about 3 minutes. This is a business he is running. Has staff do as much as possible in one of the many exam rooms then he pops in at the end. No eye contact, no time for questions. Its all about cranking the patients through. Also tries to 'upsell' as much as possible to further increase profit.
I recently went to Lasik to see about getting "rid" of my glasses. After wearing them for the past 50 years I thought it was time. While I was there they found a cataract in my left eye - no laser here. My right eye was deemed okay for the laser surgery. After quite a few checks by Dr. Smallman and his staff (at the Lasik clinic and the Eye clinic) I was very well informed as to what was available to me to improve my vision. I had the laser surgery in my right eye and the cataract removed in my left eye. I'm typing this survey without the use of glasses - thanks to Dr. Smallman and his "staff". They couldn't do enough for me, I am truly grateful. Punctuality is a fact of life. These people in medicine schedule their patients according to what ever ails them .. I would not want any Dr. to rush through my visit just to be "punctual" ...... I received better service and punctuality from Dr. Smallman than I received from my car dealership and I paid a lot, lot more for my car.
This man needs to learn how to communicate with patients. Felt like we never made eye contact although we must have at some point.I am not in a position to judge his knowledge but the service I can and at minimum it needs attention/improvement.
My mother had a cataract operation. Right after the operation he said all went well but when we returned at 2:00 that day the lens had slipped into the vitreous of the eye.He sent us off to a new Dr. who repaired it We have not heard from him in 18 months.
