While Dr. Chan's is a competent doctor (although you have to catch him on a good day: if he's in bad mood he can be quite abrasive), going to his office is hardly a pleasant experience in case you don't have an appointment: they'll make you wait forever, indefinitely, with no indications whatsoever on when your wait is likely to end. And the staff is so inefficient that they won't even know where is the closest walk-in clinic...
Dr.Chan is a very good doctor. I’m a patient of his colleague in his office and my doctor was off and I needed to be seen for a post surgical concern. Dr.chan was able to look at the surgical incision and ensured that everything was ok. I like the doctors in the office.
Excellent as a family doctor because he knows when to refer, who to refer to, and is very resourceful. He is able to help get earlier appointments with specialists. He follows up after specialist appointments. He is willing to send to a different specialist for a differential diagnosis. His own knowledge and advice are also very helpful and useful.
Dr. Chan may seem reserved at first but he is one of the best doctors I have ever had. He has personally called me at home well after hours. He has kept me out of the ER at my request and he has called the imaging clinic to stay open for me as well as have a radiologist diagnose my ultrasound on the spot. I have never had such a dedicated doctor.
Dr, Chan is an excellent doctor, but the medical group practice is so poorly managed I would be hesitant to recommend it. As others have mentioned, one person in reception is extremely rude, any other practice would have fired her long ago. I was actually lectured for daring to request an urgent appointment! There is also frequent staff turnover and physicians aren't replaced right away which means the remaining doctors have to take up the slack leading to ridiculous wait times for an appointment. It's a shame because Dr. Chan is a caring, conscientious physician but no doctor can function properly in these conditions. Best to avoid.
The first point of contact with the Health Source Clinic is the reception staff, who are unfailingly rude and borderline incompetent. Navigation of the redundant phone system will eventually result in either your call being dropped, due to call volume, or your placement on hold for several minutes. When you do manage to get through, a rapid fire voice will tell you to hold, and then you'll have to wait for another 15-20 minutes before being reconnected. This process can delay the making of an appointment by days, after which you may wait several days to a week for the appointment itself. (It should be noted, however, that the staff are phenomenal when reception is not their task) When you arrive they'll ask why you're there, even though you told them when making the appointment, and then you'll spend 20-30 minutes sitting in a waiting room. Dr. Chan will arrive and ask you why you're there, even though you've now told the staff twice (if you're there to receive the results of a test, he will be unaware of having received them, and so of course will be unprepared for additional care or diagnosis). He will sit down and log into his computer immediately, and will continue to type into it for the remainder of the session without making eye contact. If absolutely forced to, he will engage in a perfunctory physical assessment, but this is rare. When I came to Dr Chan with persistent symptoms which could indicate a wide range of possible illnesses, from the relatively benign to the potentially lethal if not addressed early, his response was to assume it was stress or diet related (despite my assurances that the symptoms had been occurring for months, that my diet had remained unchanged for years, and that I was not experiencing any unusual emotional distress) and to send me on my way without so much as touching me... He performed no physical assessment, gave no medical advice regarding further symptoms to watch out for or changes in lifestyle which may help, provided no empathy, and gave no explanation. His final word? "Come back if it gets worse."
Fantastic doctor. Very helpful and a great listener. His office staff leaves something to be desired. They are rude on the phone, though much better in person. They are unhelpful and curt. I am used to practices when you can have a more personal relationship with the doctor. If you have a few simple questions and do not want to book an appointment, or if you just want test results, you can call and ask for the doctor to call you back. The reception staff at this clinic is like a firewall. They don't give you any information on your own file, and they refuse to take messages for the doctor.
