Ratings for Dr. Benoit St-Jean
I recently had surgery performed by Dr. St-Jean at the Montfort Hospital. He was an amazing Surgeon and made me feel very comfortable and took away my anxieties during my stay. He was also extremely explanatory about the pre/during and post surgery. He was very understanding. I was greeted by wonderful Volunteers who asked if my preference in language was English or French. I replied English and each and every person that came in contact with me asked me the same question. I was treated with caring and compassionate and humourous personnel, starting with Dr. St-Jean, to the Nurses, Nicole and Reine, the Radiologists, the Technicians and even the Porters were extremely kind. I also had a wonderful Nurse in Recovery by the name of Joanne, who stayed with me the whole time, checking vitals, breathing and ensuring that I was comfortable. She was so kind and I am grateful to her for her wonderful care. Overall, I have to say that I had a very positive experience at the Montfort Hospital and should you be referred to Dr. St-Jean, you will be in very good hands. Lorraine Miller
Winston Churchill said “If you’re going through hel*, keep going!”. I totally agree. Here’s a summary of my little hel*. (sorry, firewall won't let me spell the full word) JAN 2016, driven to Montfort Hospital for what I thought was severe constipation; turns out my colon had perforated and my body was quickly being poisoned. Dr. St-Jean operated and quite literally saved my life! I woke up to find out a few inches of my colon were removed and I now had a colostomy. -- JUNE 2016, happily back to the Montfort for surgery #2, to close the colostomy and return to a normal life. Turned out I fell into that small percentage of patients whose colon suffers a leak after surgery. The leak caused infection and the effects of that infection (a traumatically intense delirium) clearly showed up a few days later and I underwent my 3rd surgery. This time, I went home with 2 ostomies (colon and small intestine). -- JULY 2016, back to emergency and admitted due to an abscess that had formed in the rectal area. – JAN 2017, 4th surgery to close the colostomy and MAY 2017, 5th and LAST surgery to close ileostomy. -- I’m now at home, healing and getting stronger and I have so much to be grateful for! Yes, I agree with Churchill’s quote and I’ll add that having temporary crutches to help you keep going, is invaluable! I had many medical crutches, first and foremost, Dr. St-Jean! I don’t remember meeting him that JAN 2016 evening, but I met him many times in the subsequent 14 months, both while hospitalized and for follow up visits. He’s clearly very busy but yet, takes the time to answer questions and his answers are to the point, honest and clear. His knowledge and confidence are obvious but yet, there’s no need to reach out for a medical dictionary to understand his explanations. There’s no arrogance about him… quite the opposite. He shows compassion, patience and an interest in you as a person, not as a number. To say I’m grateful to Dr. St. St-Jean is an extreme understatement! How do you say thank you to someone who saved your life! It would be remiss of me to not mention Suzanne (who showed so much compassion each time I called in a panic, warranted or not), Dr. Beaupré (who performed the 3rd surgery), the nurses in ICU (angels!!), the nurses, physiotherapists and support staff on the 5th floor (who cared for me and never hesitated to help, to smile back, to chat with me) and last but definitely not least, Madame Valérie, the ET nurse who I saw many times both as an inpatient and outpatient. Her knowledge is outstanding and I can never thank her enough for her teachings and care, her understanding, encouragement, and compassion. Getting to know her was a privilege! We are very lucky that the Montfort runs an outpatient clinic for “ostomy patients”; I believe it’s the only Ottawa hospital that has this and, to have someone like Valérie Chaplain running it, is priceless!
Dr St Jean is the best doctor that I have ever seen. He's also always on time, and he will even take you in earlier then your scheduled time, which has been the case for me every time I've seen him (I've been going to him for the past 4 years). He's very professional and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this doctor, he is the best of the best, an example for all to see and know. I wish I could rate him with 10 stars. Thank you Dr St Jean, for everything. God bless you!
Extremely knowledgeable and approachable. While Dr. St Jean is an extremely talented surgeon, he has no arrogance or God syndrome that many surgeons have. I'd been through years of suffering with severe diverticular disease, and had been bounced from specialist to specialist with poor results. Dr St Jean quickly got to the root of my problem, assessed the condition and set a surgery date quickly. Come game day, he was confident and reassuring; the surgery went well, recovery went well and Dr St Jean remained involved in my care. He's a very solid operator who is confident but not arrogant, he's straightforward and unlike many doctors who seem afraid to commit to an answer about anything, Dr St Jean is to the point, he doesn't bullsh*t or leave you with the vague comments like so many others. He assesses your problem, gives clear options and then performs with consummate professionalism. Why aren't all doctors like this? And his staff are very friendly and competent, not something I can say for all medical staffers. If you're lucky enough to be referred to Dr St Jean, you're fortunate indeed.
I had a inguinal hernia repaired by Dr. Benoit at the Kemptville hospital. My consultation was quick and to the point. I was able to ask questions. I didn't feel rushed. Afterwards I was given a number in case I had questions, which I had. Stephanie the receptionist was always very helpful and knowledgeable. The kemptville hospital was amazing. Very organized and very relaxed. The nursing staff was excellent. I had a nurse in training who was being shadowed and taught as I was prepped for surgery. The anesthesiologist was humorous and personable. As far as experiences go for having my first surgery I felt relaxed, comfortable and so impressed with the entire experience. Thank you to everyone involved for making this such a great experience. Getting home and my recovery were as expected. Now I'm back to my old self. If you are looking for a surgeon, I highly recommend Dr. Benoit and the staff at the Kemptville hospital.

Almost no pain after surgery and i have an excellent cosmetic result. Staff at the Kemptville hospital was super: they even called me 2 days after to inquire about my postoperative condition. Overall, super positive experience with Dr St Jean and his staff

Lise Latreille
