It’s the weekend and you’ve been looking forward to enjoying a nice glass of wine to cap off the week, but just how much is okay to drink? New research may have some insight.
While it’s pretty straight-forward to know when you’ve had too much to drink, researchers looked into just how much you can drink safely, according to a study from Harvard Medical School and published in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging.
For the study, researchers looked at data involving the alcohol consumption of 4,466 elderly people along with echocardiograms of their hearts. They were looking to see if there was any connection between how much the participants drank and changes in the structure of their heart.
They found that the more a person drinks, the more likely they were to experience changes with their hearts such as an increase in the pumping chambers of the heart which requires the heart to work harder than normal.
The results were different for men and women, with men seeing changes after more than two drinks per day or more than 14 drinks in a week. For women the amount was much less, with changes seen after just over a drink a day.
Good to know before you pop the cork and get pouring!
