What Your Social Media Status Says About You

Whether its summer vacations, a vintage-inspired brunch snap or an engagement announcement, your social media feeds say a lot more about you than you might think, new research suggests.

Certain types of status updates and posts on social media can be linked to different personality traits, according to a study by researchers published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences.

For the study, researchers assessed data collected from over 500 Facebook users who were asked questions regarding how they use the site, including status updates and their reasons for posting them.

They also looked at data involving the personality traits that the participants had, including the ‘Big Five’ traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism) as well as narcissism and self-esteem.

They found that people who had low levels of self-esteem were prone to posting about their romantic lives more often. They also found that those who identified as extroverted were more likely to share overall, especially when it comes to social interactions. Participants deemed narcissists posted the most about their own personal achievements.

So before you hit that ‘post’ button be aware of what you might be saying about your personality in the subtext.
