If you live in an area that brings a cold, cloudy winter your way, vitamin D supplements are a must. The sun, our natural source of vitamin D, isn’t strong enough to allow our bodies to absorb it, and throughout the winter, humans can develop a vitamin D deficiency.
Since vitamin D is essential in helping you maintain good bone health, and is known to play a role in warding off dangerous diseases, getting enough should be a priority.

An excerpt from the Canadian Medical Association Journal tells the true tale of a many who developed kidney damage after taking too many vitamin D supplements.
He had taken a high dosage of vitamin D over 2 ½ years- about 8000-12,000 IU.
A misguided naturopath recommended he do so. The man then went on vacation and spent his time sunbathing.
The result? Way too much calcium build up was found in his blood. He suffered from significant kidney damage.
Unlike vitamin C, which the human body disposes of through the urine if you have extra, vitamin D stays in you. Getting the proper balance is important.
While overdosing on vitamin D isn’t common- many people do have a deficiency in the North- it’s something to be wary of.
“Although vitamin D toxicity is rare owing to a large therapeutic range, its widespread availability in various over-the-counter formulations may pose a substantial risk to uninformed patients,” writes Dr. Bourne Auguste, a Clinical Fellow in Home Dialysis at Toronto General Hospital and the University of Toronto.
