This is How Much Sleep You Really Need Every Night

Unless you’re some form of futuristic robot/not human, you have to sleep.

There’s no substitute, there’s no compromise. Everyone needs sleep.

Despite sleep being one of the life’s necessities like eating and going to the bathroom, more and more people are getting less sleep. Why?

There are a couple of reasons. The most obvious is the rise of social media and technology, which we’re gluing our eyes to even when we’re in bed. The other is the demands of work and the world around us has increased, too.

But we still need sleep. It’s how the body resets and refuels. Your brain clears itself of debris, and growth hormones start going to work. Body systems start repairing themselves. And it just feels damn good to rest.

So, how much sleep is enough sleep?

A few years ago, the National Sleep Foundation recommended at least anywhere between seven to nine hours of sleep, especially those aged 18-64. The conclusion came from aggregating thousands of published research papers on relationship between sleep and health.

The studies also suggest failure to get these hours consistently can lead to a myriad of health problems. For example, those who get less than seven hours of sleep have a higher risk of developing obesity, diabetes or even cardiovascular diseases.

On the other hand, sleeping too much can be harmful too. It can be a sign of depression and other conditions.

Researchers aren’t settled on whether breaking up that seven hours of sleep into chunks can be as beneficial. But at the end of the day, try to get as much sleep as you can. Your body and well-being will thank you.
